I read in Prevention that fresh pineapple is the best thing. I have good luck with it. Depending on where you live, there is a tea called Throat Coat. Among other things it has slippery elm in it. I chew on candied ginger. One other thing that is good for this condition is horseradish. If you do not like to eat horseradish, you can just open the jar and smell it. I hope some of this helps. Get to feeling better soon.

Slippery Elm cough drops are pretty good, I tried them. The mucilaginous content was a little hard to get past, but they worked.
If you don't swallow and suck them for a while you'll feel as though you've got a giant goober in your mouth... Iwwwww!!! So remember to swallow frequently if you buy them. ;)
Candied Ginger is awesome...I love it so. It's great for colds originating from getting too cold, good for people who feel cold often, too!

Take several teaspoons of homey and mix with the juice of 1/2 lemon. Mix, and put it in a bottle and store it in the fridge.
When your throat gets scratchy, take a teaspoon of it and slowly swallow it.
Likewise, a cup of weak tea with a tablespoon of honey and a wedge of lemon squeezed into it will instantly sooth your scratchy throat. Opera singers and rock singers do this betweemn performances to loosen their vocal chords and sooth their scratchy throats.

To add on.... What about making these Herbal Throat Lozenges :
These homemade lozenges are simple, easy, and quite effective at treating a sore threat. Try them :
3 tablespoons licorice, powdered
3 tablespoons marshmallow or slippery elm, powdered
3 tablespoons red raspberry leaves, powdered
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
10 drops scented geranium, sage, or rosemary
essential oil
Honey
Cornstarch
Mix herbal powders together with just enough honey to make a thick goo. Add essential oil and mix well with fork or fingers. Pinch off small pieces, roll into balls, and flatten slightly to form a lozenge.
Toss lightly in a bowl with a little cornstarch. Set to dry for 12 hours. Store in an airtight container
