Here in the States I have been seeing these comericals about how the police are pulling over drivers that are not wearing their seatbelts. And if you are not belted you will get a ticket. I always use my seatbelt but I think this won't get people to use their seatbelts. It is a personal choice. I think if you are pulled over for another reason and in addition you are nit wearing your seatbelt then you should get a ticket. But having busy policemen and police women setting up a post to check if every driver and passenger is wearing a seatbelt is a waist of their time.I can see drunk driving and aggressive driving posts but seatbelts.

I agree that the cops have far better things to do then to try and see if someone is wearing a seat belt or not. Some of them can be quite difficult to see and to pull over someone to check is a bit silly. I'd much rather see them going after the drunk drivers or the ones that seem to incite road rage. There are far better uses for them then the seat belts.

Well I wear one because I know if I didn't the accidents I've been in would have been far worse however I do have damage to my hip from wearing the seat belt. Some are worried about if they jam or other damage they can do to the body. There are also some that just hate being told to do it.

Rabi9634 they have pre written tickets in your area. That's scarry to me. It feels to me like the police are trying to entrap certain citizens. All i can vision is seatbelts one day. One headlight the next until they have only the "correct" drivers in that area.

A lot of police revenue comes from writing tickets. There are a few hot spots near me where you'll have one officer checking cars as they pass by. That one radios up to one or more officers waiting down the road to flag down the driver and write the ticket. It's almost like an assembly line. I've watched them dish out pre-written seatbelt violations one after another. Still don't understand why people have such an issue with something that could save their lives.

I think that the idea behind the law is a good one, but I agree that it is a waste of time for police to be pulling people over for it. Of course, in the town I live in, there are a lot of cops with nothing to do, so you're more likely to get pulled over for just about anything!

It would be great if all we had to do is threaten people with getting a ticket and they would buckle up, but I don't think it will work.I am also afraid in some areas it will give the police the right to pull over people of color just beacause they want to.

I think it is a waste of precious time. I think it should be up to us whether we wear it or not. As much crime and other things going on, there is better ways to spend their time, of course, they probably will make a lot of money.

Only if the driver pays the tickets. I have visions of a driver with all these unpaid tickets in his glove compartment.

Here in or country traffic police really check for seatbelts to anyone on the streets driving..and give a ticket to those who are not wearing one..even drivers in public utitlity vehicle are being inspected for it...but only at random no specific time of the day or week...

I think any one stupid enough not to wear a seat belt in this day and age it just about asking for whatever they have coming, be it a ticket or a serious injury (that could have been avoid with the use of a seatbelt) due to an accident. In the UK it's compulsory to wear a seat belt and with good reason! They save lives! In fact in Personal Injury cases your damanges (if you claim compensation) are reduced if you are hurt in an accident that wasn't your fault if you weren't wearing a seat belt as it's seen at contriburoty negligence!

I think that is a great idea that their compensation is reduced in cases where they wern't wearing their seatbelts. What I don't like is taking police off the cases they are working on so they can check to see if everybody is wearing their seatbelts. I wear my seatbelt. It is second nature, But I know there are people out there that would either just pay the ticket or not pay the tickey and still won't wear their seatbelt.

Not positive but I think here in NJ, the law is you can get pulled over for a seatbelt only if they are pulling you over for something else. So out here I dont think you can get a ticket just for the seatbelt alone. I agree that it seems like a waste of manpower just having the police pull people over for that. Although if they are doing car seat checks that's pretty important as the children don't have a say in it.

You know 4cuteboys if it were for car seats and to see if all the children were seatbelted, I would be okay with that. The police wouldn't harass a family with children.

Ok...here's a thing. I really agree with the seatbelt law. I think this is really for our safety. if the police saw you withour seatbelts on then you will get a ticket. But having a checkpoint just to check if everybody wears a seatbelt, i don't think so...it's so nonesense...while waiting for the queue, people can wear seatbelts just to pass the check point. None sense. It will just waste your time. If there's a checkpoint for drunk driving then i will agree.

Yes and while looking for drunk drivers you find a driver without a seatbelt then give him a ticket.

I always wear my seatbelt and this stems from when my son was younger. He got on both my husbands case and mine for not putting our seatbelts on. So after awhile it just has become a habit. All these years later the seatbelt habit is still with me. I don't think that making a special practice of pulling a person is right. Because as you say our police people are busy and shouldn't have to take the time to pull a person because the seatbelt isn't on. I agree with you totally on your discussion.

I've never seen any of these posts in my area. I dont think that a cop would pull you over just to check to see if your wearing your seatbelt (at least not in my neck of the woods). If they pull you over for something else and they se your not wearing it, then they might add it to your tickit, but they wont pull you over just to check. Take care, Terry

You would think they would just put a seatbelt by the time they got to the top of a queue.I still think they have the right to be stupid.

They have the right to be stupid that is fine but they should also be forced to wear a sign saying it and a sticker on the car so those of us who do follow the rules even thou we may not agree with them can sail on thru these raod checks

I always wear my seatbelt but I know there are people who will not wear their seatbelts and I don't think they will start wearing them just because the police will give them a ticket.

Wearing seat belt is good for an individual and no way it is going to affect anyone if weared or not. Any how i agree with your point. A strict law can be enforced..But it should not be a main duty for the police to check it. In my country this is going to be a law which effects from the first of june 07.

I am not sure when in The States it became the law all I know is takes a while to get into the habit but when you do it becomes second nature.

I don't see a point in setting up seatbelt checks. I see that as being a waste of time for one very important reason. Anytime i've forgotten to put my seat belt on. "usually only happens if i'm very tired and forget, 90% of the time it's the first thing I do when getting in." and see a police officer I remember suddenly and buckle-up. If the checks are to issue tickets it's a waste of time. If they are actually intended to 'remind' people to be safer then they work. Most people buckle up when they see a cop.
