I am working on a story, and I wanted to make sure I was writing this out write. When you are saying something like Captain Dallas (using his last name)I know that Captain is capitalized. But do you still capitalize captain when you are just saying 'the captain?' Thank you

You would only capitilize it when using it as a proper name. So no, 'the captain' does not get capitilized.
