When people make racist comments...

When people make racist comments... how does that make you feel? Well I've come across a few discussion or even conversations... people make such racist comments and it makes me want to smack them. People generalize a certain group for whatever reason and literally judge everyone else. It really makes me mad. This is something that I feel strong about. Some guy on mylot said "If you are an American and it don't make you cry, move to Iran" talking about the war of America and Iran. Now does that not sound a little racist? This made me extremely mad, just because we are in a war against whatever, hell we don't even know whats going on anymore... but even though we are in a war it doesn't make everyone from that country bad people. There are good people and bad people in every country. All parts of the earth have good and bad people... why is it so hard for people to accept that? I mean, people make racist comments about Africans, Japanese, Koreans, whatever the race... and they seem to forget that their own race has just as many flawed people in it as well. Am I overreacting???

Sadly racism will rear its ugly head wherever we are, but it does not mean we have to accept it. I have been in so many arguments where people have made a comment and I will then respond with an answer they do not expect. However, racism is in every race and sadly it is a fact of life. Some people feel they need to belong in a group that they feel is superior to another, so will bring that group down to make themselves feel better. What a sad way to live!! I hate what the American Government has done to this world and their own racism has brought fear to so many, but that does not mean I hate Americans as there are so many who stand against what their government has done. I hate my own government but I hope people will not hate all UK residents because of this too. Its so easy to use a race as a scapegoat for all the problems in the world and it is ashame that your government has now dug its claws into the muslim population now the Russians are no longer a threat. To me, the average man on the street making an ignorant comment can be ignored and it will not cause harm, but when we are being brainwashed by very powerful individuals, as so many are, then racism is a serious matter and I wish more people would think for themselves instead of believing everything that is told to them. You've only got to look at the amount of discussions on this site against Islam, it makes me shudder. Thank goodness I was born and raised to question what is put infront of me and I do not just follow what the government want us to believe, which is causing so much racism today.

Thanks for your comments, but in my view the racism that is so prominent nowadays is the racism against the muslims, this is why I made the comment. I have just watched a programme on secret flights the CIA are making to secret prisons based around the world. A person is suspected of terrorism without any conclusive evidence and they are tortured because of this. If this isn't hate and ignorance I do not know what is.

Racism sucks, and everyone living in a free society has the moral obligation to fight its spread as best they can. I don't hate Iraqis, Iranians, N. Koreans, Cubans, or anyone else because of their government's policies. I don't hate followers of the Prophet because of the extremists. I do question why moderate Muslims aren't taking to the streets in protest against those who seek to spread hate in the name of Allah, though. That's why I put a comment here, because a backlash against Islam is a very, very predictable result of the actions of the terrorists who seek to write its name across the globe in blood. That doesn't make it right, but I thought it did make it not the best illustration for this discussion. Peace!

I really hate racist comments as well. I have an aunt that uses the "n" word about 50 times in any given conversation, and I no longer speak to her for this reason. I've just never understood racism. While I can hate individuals who have done really horrible things, I just can't hate or judge people based on race. I have known wonderful people from many races, and horrible people from many races. Personally, I prefer to judge people on their actions and ideas than on the color of their skin or where they (or their ancestors) are from.

Well well I come from a redneck family in Kentucky.... I hate the "n" word too... I even hate it when black people say. I find that it's offensive like any word that could be used as a insult or generalization.

I havn't seen any remarks like that here!? And I'm here a lot :-) I think rasism is a sign of low intelligence to be honest. Why would a sane person have anything against someone just because of their colour / religion and so on?

I don't think you over reacted at all. I think you stood by your beliefs. We all over the planet are in a war with an Enemy that changes names continuously. War is wrong. Perhaps we should send the pOLITIONS to war and that would resolve the issues quicker. We don't want our brothers, fathers, sons to go get killed, often for reasons we don't understand. We can we realise that we are one race, just beautiful, different varities with much knowledge to share. When will humanity learn?

Gee, and I was getting so happy that with all the movement all over the world and the integration between our children, that we might finally become one world = human! No time for racism, we all bleed the same colour, I wish we would settle all our differences and learn to appreciate each other's cultures instead of making sarcastic remarks and causing pain and suffering throughout the land.

Yea... wishful thinking... Some people just need to mature about it. You think I over reacted though... for getting mad about that statement?

I don't think you're overreacting. I'm multiracial and I hear racist comments from both sides of my family. It's really closeminded because when people start saying racist things like that, it becomes clearer to me that no race is better then the other. I just hope the people saying these stupid things realize it eventually.

Not in any way, my friend. Racism, discrimination really sucks. I'm a filipino and i've heard so many discriminations other people from other races say about us asians and that really sucks. What if we come from a third world country? We're all equal in the eyes of god right? ANyway, i feel the same way too you know. So many people become narrow-minded when it comes to matters like these but what the heck, they don't put food on our table. (",)

I hate it too when people make these narrow comments. I've found that on MyLot people seem to think that it's ok to say things that they might not (at least one hopes not) say to someone's face. And it's not just about a particular race, I've read some sad things about women, muslims etc too. My favorites: ' how do you discipline your wife/girlfiend', 'It must be embarrassing to be a muslim, they are known to violent terrorists' and 'These Iraqi animals kill women and children, lets hope they kill each other instead of our troops.' I think that it's unfortunate that people are so bigoted and that we must respond to these people and let them know that this is unacceptable behaviour.

You are not over reacting, you have every right to think what you want to think and discuss it, this is what this web is all about. Well i do not think that the u.s. is in war with iran yet, but maybe it will be soon. LOl. But you do have to separate things here. I have been here for four months already, and i usually spend alote of time here, and i see alote of things. There is the responses which are strong and seem too directly, and some of them from time to time seem a bit too much. And there are the responses that are really racist. Now the racists comments usually gets deleted, but the racist opinions do not, and that is because we each live in a different country with a different cultures, and there are people that do not know any other way then their own. I just move on. I really do not think there are much that i can do in order to change those.

I feel bad about it specially when I am the target of the issue. I am a Filipino and lots of people around the world think and have bad side comments us Filipinos. I cant blame them for thinking so or being so vocal about it coz there are always exceptions to the rule and I hope I could be strong enough to to feel bad about it.

I understand how you would feel about being a target... but every color, every race is a target for racism. Don't let it get to you, and fight against it. Once everyone realizes that race isn't as big of deal then maybe when ever in the future it might barely not exist. Then again, it's wishful thinking. Thank you for your response.

i brush it off because i come across racist people everyday and its sad that people keep it going . but its not going to stop until the older generation stop trying to keep it going and learn to accept people for who they are and not because of their skin color.

I feel the same way, I have 2 nephews and a neice that a bi-racial and I hear people say things all the time and it angers me. But, there are just as many people who are racist against religion, too. I think that just because there are bad seeds in every race and every religion, not every person in that race or religion needs to be put through having to hear comments against their race or religion. If people would just give people a chance, without having any biases, the world would be a better place. You cannot condemn a whole race or religion just on the action of a few people in those races or religions, but I see people doing that all the time. I feel that it is just narrow minded to be that way.

People who gives racist comments should be given a penalty or something like that. I believe there's one aspect in them that needs further education, and that is RESPECT.

I have encounters racism in my own family, and it really stinks. I don't care who makes the comment, I will speak up against it. Racism is not right. When listening to a German CD at my father's house (I like German music!!) he accused me of listening to Nazi music. One day just to throw him off balance I took a handful of my favourite CDs (Jewish, Danish, German, Russian, Croatian, American Jazz, French, Arabic) and put them ALL in Dad's CD player and put them on random-replay. He just sat there speechless. I LOVED IT!!! I love all kinds of music and all kinds of people. I'm listening to a German song right now.

When I was young, during the Cold War, ignorant people used to say, If you don't like our government, go live in the U.S.S.R.! As a young but ardent anti-Viet Nam war protester, I heard this a lot. My usual response had something to do with, our sodiers are dying so I don't have to be stuck thinking like you, buttcake! Right wing danglebags seem to think the freedom of being American means, everybody is free to think like them. It's this kind of xenophobia that makes the children of the white European immigrants who flooded the USA in the 19th and 20th century slam our national doors shut against the current flood of immigrants, who happen not to share their lillywhite skin. Racism, xenophobia, both flourish in the conditions created when a mind is firmly closed. These are a far greater threat to our free society than people excercising their right to hold a minority position! My response to that discussion took a slightly different view, but, no, you weren't over-reacting. Anyone who truly understands what freedom means would be pissed off by the stuff they wrote to you!

the statement the man made isn't racist it prejudice there is a big big difference. America isn't a race its a country so his comment was not based on race it was based on the country as a whole. It was a prejudical comment yes but he's intitled to his own opinion. As far as his comment in genereal goes it is not worth getting all worked up over. He said it to get a rise and apperenlty it worked for him. To answer your orgiginal question I ignore those that like to make racist comments, what good does it do me to get all worked up over it and let them get to me?
