onions, to cry or not to cry?!

so i was chopping up some onions earlier...and you know what? they haven't affected me lately! i used to cry and cry. my eyes would burn for several minutes after. i've tried a food processor, a chopper we have that sorta "hides" the food you're chopping. i've found that yellow sweet onions don't affect me as much as say white onions do. do you guys "cry" when chopping/cutting onions? there are a lot of old wives tales on how to prevent this from happening. do you know any? or have ideas as to your own prevention?

To prevent "crying" light a candle next to where you are cutting the onion. I've also put sunglasses on when cutting them and it seems to help a little.

I'm sure any candle would do. Maybe I'll try a plain one next time. :o)

lol! i was just wondering if it was a real smelly candle, if that would just take your mind off of the onions, OR if it was just the wick burning that let out some fumes/chemical that reacted with the fumes/chemicals of the onions!!!

i will let you know!! you know how sometimes they say to drink yucky medicine or something, to hold your nose while you do it? it helps!! i think all of our senses work together, and if you shut one down, it affects the others, so maybe that's why holding your breath works!

If you slice a red onion, and let it sit for 5 or 6 hrs with sugar between the layers, the syrup that forms and spills out makes a great allergy formula, two teaspoons will do ya,lol, so I say cry.

Actually although the onions irritate my eyes, they dont make me cry, they make my eyes sting a little but thats it, for some reaosn i find that not breathing in the scent of the onions is a good way of not crying :)

There are times thatthe onions seem more "potent" than others and my eyes may burn or water. But most of the time they don't really affect me much. I do however, use the yellow onions more so than the white. SO maybe that is why. I really like red onions and those don't bother me either. I don't have any ideas on how to prevent it, never even heard any wives tales either. I live a "sheltered" life.. LOL

LOL, I can't imagine any of those working..lol But you never know

see i think the white ones are way bad! cuz i have less (to none even) tears with the yellow ones. yummers, red onions, i haven't used those in awhile, and yea, those never affected me either. no it's not that you live a "sheltered life" as you say...it's just i hear weird things here and there. old wives tales for onions?: depends on HOW you cut them/ put a toothpick in your teeth, munch down on the toothpick, THEN cut the onions/ cut them near an open window/ before you peel the onion, heat it up for one minute/ things like that!

i know! lol! well actually this friend of my mom's told me about the toothpick. i tried it twice, yea, not so much happening with that, LOL!!

well i havent chopped onions in a few years but i cna say when i used to, i never cried, i was always told an old wives tale that seemed to work for me, stick your tongue out half way and gently bite not too hard so you break your skin, just enough to stop air enterin your mouth, this, apparently dries up ur spores in ur eyes....? again, its not scientiffically proven, but it has worked for me

well you are lucky. tears don't flow down my cheeks or anything, but i tear up, and my eyes sting...the tears come from the stinging pain i believe. those dang white onions are potent i tell ya!!

hehehe I have never cried and I have looked for the reason for that and guess what: I found it =) In my case it is because I am wearing contacts and they protect your eyes from the onion =) I usually get oto do all the chopping in my house *lol*

my hubby has contacts too, and he cries MORE when he's wearing them...BUT his eyes water and itch and bug him a lot when he's wearing the contacts. he needs a new pair now anyway...maybe it's the different kinds of contacts? BUT you may be right cuz it would create a barrier! some people think wearing glasses or contacts is a curse, however, for chopping onions it may save you! thanks marie!!

Onions also make me cry, so I try to chop them up as fast as I can. I tryed holding them under cold running water but it does not seenm to help. I no of a old wives tale that someone told me a long time ago when I was a teenager if you hold a couple of wooden matches in your mouth that should help your eyes from burning. But dont light the matches. I heard this helps.

actually i have seen almost everyone cry when they chop onions. its almost a natural thing. but i can give you a very good tip, and believe me it works. my eyesight is a bit weak, and i dont use spectacles, i rather feel comfortable with contact lenses. and believe me when i am wearing lenses and chopping onions i dont even feel that i am actually working with the onions. my eyes dont shed a single tear. and if i am wearing spectacles which is very rare, i have to wash my eyes several times, before i am through with the task. if you dont have contacts, try sunglasses, they also work.

I cry no matter what (big sissy lol) But i do know that if you wear contacts they dont affect you or affect you very little. I used to wear them when i was younger and i worked a conveinience store where i had to slice onions on a slicer for the sandwiches that we made and when i knew for sure that i was going to have to do that then i made sure i had them in. and it was bearable then.

I believe it depends on what variety the onions are. Sometimes I do and with other onions I do not. For me it seems to be the ones that smell more causing the tears.

I used chop everyday oinions, but by god grace, it never affected my eyes and never cried. My daughter and wife used to chop up onions but never had to cry while chopping up onions. I do know it affects most of the people when they chop up onions. I used to wonder why it affects lot of people but people like not got affected. I do not have answer.

It's easy for me to cry when I am chopping the onions. Sometimes I will wear the swimming glasses to prevent it. I heard a trick but I haven't tried it yet. That is when you are cutting the onions, do it in the water.

Chopping onion make me cry too... That is my problem when i'm cooking some foods....One day my cousin visit in my house she told me the secret of never crying when you chop onions. she told me we need a sharp knife to chop it. Try it, its really worth.

i have heard that from a chef actually, and he said it's because then the sharp knife simply slices thru it, whereas a dull knife sorta extracts the juices, mushes it more, so the "fumes" of the onion come out more fragrantly! good point to bring up!! thanks maybey!

Yes, I've had that happen. I love onions and use them a bunch when cooking or making sandwiches. I think it does depend on the type you use. Some of them can be pretty strong. I don't know how to prevent the crying. But, after cutting if you wash your hands with a little salt it helps take the smell off your hands.

i am the cook in our house so i know how to prevent the onions irritate your eyes. All you just have to do is after you peal the onions, you soak it in the water for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and chop it..i'm sure even you chop the onions over your nose it won't irritate your eyes..promise!!
