Do you re-read a novel?

Do anyone of you re-visit a novel i.e. read it again or once you have read it you do not return back to it. Most of the novels that I read, I cannot read them a second time. One series that I liked to re-read again and again is the Harry Potter series. I also like to re-read comics. What is your opinion on this? Cheers! Ram

We're totally alike.. I read my Harry Potter books over and over again too. I just can't get enough.. =) Besides Harry Potter, I do read some of my old books that I've already read.. Sometimes I read them I'm bored or sometimes when I've totally forgotten the storyline. =)

I would not re-read a novel immediately after finishing it. If some chapters or lines strike me hard enough, fine, I might re-read that, but not the entire novel. But I do have favorite novels that I have re-read many times - at different settings, separated by some time of course. :P

That's for sure in my case as well, I can't re-read a novel immediately, there has to be a time lapse of at least a year or two, before I consider re-reading... Cheers! Ram

A good novel is like a treasure mine. You can't get out all its jewels at once. Good novels are like good friends, and I'm glad to meet them over and over again. That's what happens to you with the Harry Potter series. You enjoy the places, the familiar conversations... Now, in great novels, this pleasure is magnified by the complexity of the characters. The first time, you thought he/she was a complete villain, the second time you may discover some human weakness in him/her. Once it happened to me that after the third lecture my sympathies changed parties. Many times a novel is so fascinating that you just read straightforward, without due attention to details. A second reading will give you the rest to appreciate language, expression, style more than the mere plot. That's why I love to read good books again (and again).

That's well said, but somehow only some of the novels really have had the intrigue to pull me to re-read it to uncover all it's jewels. The rest were more like ok I now know what happens and that's all. Cheers! Ram

I have re-read all the harry potter books, the bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, The Demonata series by Darren Shan, most of my comics/ graphic novels, and the anita blake series. I'd reccomend each one of the series I have mentioned.

I was looking at Bartimaeus Trilogy once I am done with HP7 and the Eragon series. Cheers and thanks for suggesting.

Absolutley go for it, I forgot to mention Eragon as well, another series I've enjoyed. If you've enjoyed Eragon and Harry Potter, 100% go for Bartimaeus, it's amazing.

I think I re-read 4 or 5 books in all my life, one for sure because I had to read it for my final exam in high school and I didn't like it but then saw it on my table a year later and read it again and now it's one of my favorite books... I could read 100 times the bone collector (no it's not the one I talked about before, that was 1984 by George Orwell), never read HP... But if I like a book (such as the bone collector) and maybe I read more than 200 pages in two days I could read it again first because I like it and secondly to understand it better...

Somehow I have never been able to read the classic literature leave alone re-read it :). The only exception could be the Sherlock Holmes series if you call it classic literature. Cheers! Ram

Well, comics I like to re-read hands down. I can always go over a good comic. :D As for novels I don't re-read them much. It only happens when I truly can't remember the story. That may happen more times then I'd like to admit. lol

There are quite a few books that I have read a second time. When I choose to re-read a book it's usually because I really enjoyed it and would like to just get the story again (kinda like rewatching a favorite movie) or because I enjoyed it but there where some complicated things that I might have missed. It's fun to reread things and then realize that the author was giving you hints about the outcome of the book that you might have missed the first time around. Perhaps you've noticed this when you've re-read the Harry Potter books? Here are some titles that I've not only re-read once, but some up to 4 times: To Kill a Mocking Bird The Red Dwarf books Harry Potter books (especially book 3) All my Fables comics Box Office Poison comic/graphic novel Neverwhere That reminds me, I need to go read the last Harry Potter book before the new one (and last sadly) comes out this summer!

I will tell you reason for that... It has the Rereadica charm put on it by J.K. Rowling, that just seems to be pulling people to read it again and again. Cheers! Ram

Somehow I felt Hitchhiker's.. too flimsy even to complete it once. LOTR may be worth reading again, but it is too dark compared to the lively magic of HP series. Cheers! Ram

So far, no. But if I should run out of any new books to read, then I will probably read some over again. Also, further down in the discussion someone mentioned flicking a few pages ahead, I have done that once or twice but it always makes me feel terrible -- like I have cheated or done something against the rules. Many times I will read before going to sleep and if I don't have a good recollection of what I have read the night before I re-read the pages. One other thing--do any of you keep notes on the cast of characters in the books? There have been a couple of books that I have read lately that seem to have a ton of characters and I wished that I had kept a character list with a very short description.

I don't keep a list, though most often when I read an interesting book, my dreams tend to impersonate each of the lovable characters at one night or the other. So that way usually before the end of the novel, I have a great idea of what the character is like :) Cheers! Ram
