I did hire a personal trainer recently, but think it was a mistake. I'm pretty motivated already. I had some weight-lifting injuries, and wanted someone to check my posture to make sure I was lifting correctly. I had seen a physiotherapist and done lots of reading on the web, and it turned out that I felt like I knew way more than the trainer. I think they can be great, if you're new to gyms or if you have a specific goal that you want to reach, but if you do a lot of reading about fitness and don't need to be pushed, then I don't think they're necessary.
