this is not really a knitting question but it has to do with yarn. I was wondering if there is a way to make a thicker rope from yarn. Is there a way to braid strands to make a rope? if anyone could help that would be great!! thank you!

Maybe it would help if we knew a little more about that you were looking to use this "rope" for. I'm wondering if an i-cord is a good fit for your needs. I-cords are pretty easy to make, though you do need double point needles to make them. Check out this link: http://www.knitting-and.com/knitting/patterns/stitches/icord.htm This shows you what i-cords look like as well as gives you some directions on how to make them. Hope this helps.

yes this is possible to do i used to do it when i was a little girl i used to make colorful belts and big scrunchies to wear in my hair i am not sure how to do it with yarn though i used to do it with looms they are these round pieces of fabric that is stretchy and kind of like pony tail holders they sell them in a big bag at walmart or at a craft store like hobby lobby and ac moore you wrap and twist them around your fingers i do not remember the exact pattern but you could probable look up on the computer how to do it right

Why not just ply them together? This is easiest if you have a spinning wheel, but otherwise you just twist two ro more yarns together to make a thicker yarn. If you unravel a lenth of bought yarn you'l see how its done, you need to put a little extra twist on each pience first so it will twist back togehter making the whole new yarn stable. Its easy when you start doing it though. What are you hoping to get at the end of it? That will help us suggest good methods?

of course you can braid several strands together as the other members have suggested...however it depends on what you want to do with it...if you're wanting to use it in the same manner as a regular rope, i don't think it will work due to the elasticity of yarn...it stretches to a certain degree...so even if you braid it, it will stretch...so determine exactly what purpose you have for it before you go to the trouble of braiding a bunch of yarn.
