It depends on where you are staying? Thailand is a big country. What part of Thailand are you going? There are many very cheap hostels throughout the country. Some as little as $1 or $2 a night.

To stay in Phuket it will be more expensive as it is mainly touristy. I stayed in two different hostels in Phuket and both were very nice and affordable. If you're looking for a place with more nightlife and things to do go to Patong beach. I've also visited Karon beach, but there wasn't as much to do there...it could also be that 2nd time around was after the tsunami.. Go to www.phuket.com for information on hostels/hotels to stay. Keep in mind that it is very expensive here compared to the rest of Thailand. It also depends on what season you to Thailand as for how expensive the hostels will be. Sometimes if you go during the low season you can get a room for half the price of what it would be during the high season. As for Bangkok, I stayed in two different Sawasdee hostels: www.sawasdee-hotels.com. The two I stayed at were Sawasdee Krungthep Inn and Sawasdee Smile Inn. Both of these were very cheap...I think about $5 a night and perfectly safe. Most of the time they offer you a safe box where you can put your valuables. I never had a problem with theft or anyone trying to break into my room. You also get private rooms for that price. Showers were included in the rooms. These hostels are very close to The Grand Palace and Khao San Rd...a "hip" place for tourists. www.khaosanrd.com has some good information on what to do and where to stay in Bangkok. Great website!

There are so many hotels and guest houses in Bangkok. The City is big and one has to consider convenience in moving around. One place fairly conveniently located is Indra Regent Hotel, medium grade. This is in the Pratunam Area, in the heart of the City. You can check it out on the internet. There are so many things to see in Bangkok. Have a nice trip !
