I was just wondering, what is the chances for a grownup to get mumps. I had all my vaccines when I was a child, but never had mumps. I had all the other funny ones, chicken pox, measels, shingles. Mumps are going around in our nabourhood now, and I know it's very contagious. How dangerous is it?

I don't know if there's any scientific basis but they say that if you get mumps during adulthood, chances are you're going impotent. I had mumps when I was a little kid but as of now I haven't acquired chicken pox and measles. You should be careful not to get infected.

i had mumps when i was a kid. others believe that you should have it while you are still young or else you're gonna have some difficulty when you reach the old age or if you're a pregnant woman, something might happen to your child---genetically. im not sure about that if its true. there are no basis as to how dangerous it is.

That is hard to say for me. Mumps are virtually non existent in the United States. I've never had mumps, measles, or shingles. Measles is not common in the U.S. either. I've had chicken pox as a child, but I know as an adult, chicken pox is much more painful. So I would assume mumps for adults would be even worse - since mumps are worse than chicken pox. I really hope you don't get them!

I hope not too! I think that the older I get the bigger a "sissy" I become...

Fulton honey - just nipped on for a minute whilst Niamh is resting and this post really caught my eye! Mumps can be quite mild and pass without too many problems, on he other hand it is a serious illness and there are many complications including deafness, fertility problems and menengitis! I get quite upset when I hear that mumps is resurfacing as I do believe it that parents are getting complacent to the dangers because immunisation means we do not see it that often! Here is a link to a BMJ site about the possible complications! xxx

Mummymo, thank you for the link and advice. I also believe that you should be protected against contracting it when you've been immunised. My son is showing signs of mumps, he's all swollen, had a temperature, but it's getting better now. Glad to hear Niamh is resting a bit. Good luck - R
