Why we call those pins safety pins? Do you use safety pins still. When you use them? During my school days when buttons are broken I use to fasten the clothes with safety pins. Some keep the safety pins always with them. Are they really safe?

Safety pins are very useful, to fasten the clothes when their buttons are gone, to fix the slippers, when they suddenly cut off on the way, so that till you find cobbler or come home, you can manage. But suddenly they open on their own, and hurt us and we will be in an odd place like meeting or giving speech or before boss etc. That time they are boring. But otherwise safety pins are safe and convenient.

The last time I have used one was back in the 1990's sometimes. I do not even know where they are anymore. I am not sure why they are called that at all. They might be safe, I don't really know.

yes indeed they are useful in case of emergency, its better we keep in pur purse, if suddenly if our clothes get torn, we can immediately cover that with safety pins, not only in case of clothes but also when our footwear gets damaged by somemeans when we are travelling with safety pins we can really manage the situation and can stop worrying about what happened and can happily resume what we were doing .... Thanks for posting a useful discussion... Byee Vani.

I have poked myself with safety pins so I don't know if they are safe! I do carry safety pins around and I do use them often. My daughter is into this emo thing and uses them for decoration on her jeans and she also wears them as earrings! I used to do the same during the punk era of my life, so I don't say too much, as long as they aren't dangling from her nose I am ok.

I guess Safety pins are safer than their relative the straight pin which has no sort of cover for the point. I use safety pins when I wear wrap skirts as extra insurance against wind gusts.

Glad to know that safety pins save you when the wind gushes in to the skirt.

Saftey pins are like any thing else. They are safe as long as you use them corectly. They can be used as a repair in an emergancy. I have seen them made into decorative pins to wear too. When my kids were babies I used many to hold on their diapers. My grandaughter uses them to hold fancy patches on her clothers. I think that the saftey pin is one of those great inventions that come along and change our live and we don't realize just how much we rely on them.

Despite them being very pointy when used properly and not rusty they are indeed handy and quite safe. I used baby safety pins to keep the cloth diapers on my kids and indeed they were safe. I don't use them as much however they are handy to have around sometimes.

I think safety pin is not safe at all. I remember when my son was still a baby I use the safty pin to fasten his napkin and there is one time that the pin's head was not fasten properly, it nearly pokes my son's belly. I immediately change to pampers for my baby. For adults it is good for emergency cases for fastening lost button hole. I hope the design will be changed to make safty pin more safe.

Hello samson, I dont know why they call it safety pin. Probably its refer to it use, to save anyone from embarrasment when their trousers hook or buttons suddenly broke. I think it is fairly safe to use because you need to push it to open and it remains intact unless when you want to take it off.
