does anyone on here volunteer anywhere? my daughter is wanting to volunteer at the local pet shelter and my hubby thinks it is waist of time because she will not be getting paid. I think it is great . she will get her foot in the door and maybe get a job with a local vet. or something like that. Plus be helping animals.

I could not disagree with your husband more. I volunteer a lot. I love helping people. It gives you a great feeling and it helps your character. My high school required us to volunteer. College applications like to see volunteer work and also I have found it helps when applying for a job. Let's say she walks dogs for the shelter, it will help her get dog walking work in the future. Your daughter sounds like a great person for considering this. You are a good mother for raising such a person.

I volunteer at Christmas time ringing bells for the Salvation Army. They helped us after our last housefire and so give back to them. Also am working on donating some talent to the clothing bank as soon as my knee is better. Currently walking without a cane and so can help carry and put things in their place in the free clothing bank building. Tis a good thing to volunteer. It goes well on a resume for sure.

I agree with you and strongly disagree with your housband. Things have value in themselves - money is not the only good thing in life. Your daughter will learn that it is a good thing to help others, she will learn about taking care of animals. I think she should be encouraged to do this by her father - you should make him take a second look at this before he dismisses it.
