When would you let your child drink coffee?

I am at my parent's house this weekend for my sister's wedding shower. The wedding was two weeks ago. Anyway, I just about died when I saw my father giving my 7 year old nephew and six year lod brother coffee for breakfast. I think that 6 and 7 is a little young to start giving them coffee. What do you think? Would you give that young of a child coffee?

No, I don't think children that young should drink coffee. I think you should let your child start drinking coffee when they need it. Which means a teenager, probably wait until 16. That's when school can start getting stressing and hectic, and also when they start getting jobs. So they might get less sleep then they did before. So when they start needing it is when they should start drinking coffee, if they want to of course.

Thanks for the comments. I tend to get concerned about giving things like that to a child so young.

Research has proven that it takes 32 glasses of water to neutralize the acidity that's found in one cup of coffee! Who has the stamina to drink that much water just to restore proper PH to their bodies? All cancer and disease is found in an acidic environment. For our bodies to be in optimum health they need to fall in the alkaline range of the scale. I would suggest researching your options, there is such a thing as organic healthy coffee that naturally neutralizes caffeine yet improves concentration and energy levels and is safe for children.

My grandfather often gave my cousin coffee at that age. They were very close. He would put in the coffee a little sugar and mostly milk. There was just enough coffee to just give the drink a little color. of course this was 50 years ago. it never hurt her.I don't think she drinks coffee now. Her son was very hyper when he was little. this was before the ADHD and ADD thing that we have going on to day. any way herDr told her to give him some coffee because it acted the opposit as it does on adults. that much coffee probably won't hurt the boys since it wasa once in a while thing.

If children are tending to be hyper, coffee will calm them down. It may be that your father was asked to do this with these kids to make sure they didn't get to wound up during the party.

I don't think it would have bothered me if it was a few sips but they both had about half a mug full.

No, I would not give a child that young caffeinated coffee. Why give a child a chemical that is going to make his/her heart race and why get their bodies addicted to caffeine?(yes, caffeine is addictive!) However, most people don't think about the amount of caffeine that a child gets in soft drinks and chocolate!

I know how addicting caffeine is. I am very well hooked on it myself and it is very hard to quit.

I think children should have milk instead of coffee, or a little coffee with milk. You know, every thing has its benefit.

The new thinking on caffiene is give it to child and it calms them down. Ritilan is a stimulent which reacts the opposit on child that is the same thought as caffine in child. Both of my sisters give caffine to their children. One sister her child is grown the other sister her son is 8. The doctors did not recommend it when my children where little they are now 26, and 29. Go figure it will change in about 10 years.

This only works well for children and adults with ADD or ADHD. It does work for me but I wouldn't give it to a child just to see the effects of it. On my nephew and Tyler it made them very hyper.

its wrong to give your child cofee at a tender age because once you get addicted to caffine its tough to leave so better be watchful on what you give your child at what age

Thank you for the repsonse. I agree about the caffiene. I know that I am very addicted to it. I wouldn't want my child to be at that age.

Yes I do think thatis to young. Coffe will stunt their growth I would give coffe to a teen about 16 or up but to a little kid I wouldn't give it them.

I take not more than a cup of coffee every morning.Excessive coffee drinking is often thought to lead to higher blood pressure. It's been shown that drinking 4-5 cups of coffee can raise your blood pressure by 5 points. Tea is better for you than coffee. Green teas I really good for you. I rt to drink at least one cup a day when I can afford to buy it.

They actually have coffee for kids. This is the first time I have heard of this. Then again I have not been looking for caffeinated children's drinks.

When my youngest daughter was in half-day kindergarten, she spent afternoons with her grandmother, who always greeted her with a cup of coffee (decaf). It never bothered me, since it was always decaf, and in fact I thought it was cute to hear her say things like, "My granddaughter was coming home, so I had to put on a pot of coffee." Now that my daughter is a teenager, I think the coffee-drinking may account for the fact that her teeth are slightly stained.

It probably does count for the staining. My concern was the caffeine. I had a cup as well and it gave me quite a buzz.

When I was drinking a frapuccino of starbucks, my 3 & 6 year old nieces were looking at me so intently that they want to taste the drink, puppy dog eyes... my weakness! When I gave let them sip, a friend of mine noticed and said that there is coffee in the drink, should I let them drink it? Well, it's just 2 sips (I think!!!) Made me remember my first nephew, who is already 21 this year, who drinks coffee when he was a kid, he actually told me when they were in grade school, his classmates were pouring milk and chocolate drinks, and they were looking at him when he requested coffee!!! lol My nephew is as healthy as can be, so I guess drinking coffee might be ok, just not too strong, like a mixture with the color as light as tea. Kids are so curious, that they would just try anything! Might be when your nephews were observing your father enjoying his coffee, they could not resist trying it!!! Won't be your father's fault, especially with the puppy dog eyes technique, he might be thinking a taste would not hurt them!!! Cheers!

I would agree if it would have been just a taste but this was half a coffee mug full for each of them. Talk about hyper children.

I started drinking coffee at a young age. I think I was about 12, and even then I only drank a cup on the weekends. If the kids only have a little bit on random occasions and not on a regular basis, then its okay. But other than that I think a child that young shouldnt have coffee regularly.

Thank you for your response. I think it is important though to make sure that we know what we put in our childrens body and I am not sure that caffeine is the right thing for them till they get a bit older.

My 2 year old hates the smell of coffee. I won;t be letting my child drink coffee until they are at least 12 or 13. Being a coffee addict myself I know the effects it can have.

Thank you for the comments. That is my opinion as well. I am addicted to anything with caffeine so I don't want to expose Nick to that.
