We have been having some severe weather with these late afternoon thunderstorms and it got me to thinking about the weather. Some people are very frightened by thunder and/or lightning. I am usually fine with the thunder part but I don't like seeing or hearing lightning, especially when it strikes close by. Do you enjoy thunder and/or lightning or do you have a fear of it?

As I child I was always petrified of thunder and lightening, the flashes would make me run out of bed with a blanket, pillow and favourite teddy bear and run into my parents room and sleep beside my mum on the floor, I hated it, I used to ask my dad to promise me it wouldn't thunder lol! Even as an adult I still don't like it, it's the lightening that puts me on edge more than the noise.

Awww, I can just picture you running with a blankie and teddy bear now! I find the lightening upsets me more than the thunder also. I'm just glad I don't live in a glass house!

I tend to get an adrenaline rush when we have bad weather. It facinates me yet also frightens me. We had a really bad wind storm at the house we used to live at a few years back and it tore down a telephone pole, crushed a truck, took down a tree. Then another storm, lightening hit a tree right outside our bedroom window. Somehow the lightening traveled and blew out or cordless phone and computer. We've had at least 3 tornadoes hit homes in about a 5 mile radius from our house in the last 2 years alone, so I get a little anxious when I see bad storms coming. But I do think it is pretty when it is just a basic thunderstorm and am amazed by the power of mother nature.

Wow, I don't blame you for being nervous! Having a tornado only 5 miles away is really close! Stay safe my friend!

You and I are having the same weather. I am not bothered by it. I think that how people around you respond to weather events determines how you will too. After that you just carry it into your adulthood. My mom let everything freak her, so I got to be as opposite as I could, probably to prove a point. Rain, thunder, lightning, nothing bothers me.

That sounds like what I would do...hit the other extreme.

I understand Terry! Sometimes they are worse than others and you just want to hide.

It's not the thunder and lightening I am afraid of, it's tornados. So since tornados come with thunderstorms mostly, I get freaked out. I have always had this fear and I can't bring myself to enjoy a thunderstorm, unlike my husband who loves them.

Oh my - you've hit on my biggest phobia. With me, it's not just a case of not liking thunder and lightening, - I am actually terrified of it. Even seeing a storm on TV or in a movie can make me shake and cry. I'm only glad I live in the UK where we probably only have one storm a year, and then not a really bad one as experienced in some other parts of the world, because no amount of medication/hypnotherapy/herbal remedies over the years have ever been able to cure me of my phobia. It is actually a recognised phobia called brontophobia, and is one of the reasons why I hate Summer and hot weather because that's when thunder and lightening comes.

Oh wow, it sounds like you have a horrible case of this. I'm wishing you don't encounter any bad storms this year.

I love a good storm - so much raw, powerful beauty. I love to sit and watch the storm raging out the windows. We have some really good storms here in Florida. The sky changes purple, blue, black, green .... I live near Tampa ....called the lightning capital of the world... and we do get some amazing storms. I've been driving home across a 13 mile bridge/causeway with ocean on both sides and the most amazing lightning flashing above. I've even seen a few water spouts. Granted, if it's lightning I don't want to be outside... I am afraid if I'm out in the open when the lightning starts and there is no cover around. So many people get struck by lightning around here.

I'm not frightened by thunder/lightning, but have a healthy respect for lightning. It can get pretty wicked around here. I just try to be inside when storms come rolling through. It does scare me when a particularly loud storm comes through in the middle of the night. It's scarey to be woke up by a LOUD clap of thunder/lightning!

Yeah, being awakened in the middle of the night by an unexpected lout clap of thunder and/or lightening can be bad! I prefer to keep storms during the day so I can keep an eye on the weather :)

From childhood I hear that lightening will affect our eye sight and thunder may fall on us or our house and we will be killed or house destroyed. Hence I do not like both. Especially if thunder and lightening comes in the night, I say arjuna, phalguna, parthiva, as it is a mythology that, if Mahabharatha character Arjuna is going on the sky with his chariot, then this thunder sound will come. If we pray to him, no danger for us. If I say this, I feel fear is subsiding.

i'm not afraid of it at all. i love a good storm. i'll still be cautious though, if it gets too bad i'll watch from inside. The louder the thunder and the brighter the lightning the better.

Yes, last summer we had several deaths due to lightning strikes. It seems to be more common now than several years ago.
