I opened my morning paper to find that yet another man has been elctrocuted and died as he attempted to steal copper. He was on a ladder attempting to get copper wiring from a utility pole. This is about the 6th person to die this way in my community. What do you think needs to be done to stop this tragedy? Has this been happening in your area?

Hello, crazynurse,i cannot imagine it has happend six times in your community, that mean some people cannot earn enough money for living, that is why they need to take the risk doing this, may be the government should provide some jobs for the unemployed people so that people do not need to worry about their living even they lose their jobs. Also the government should install some insulating cover for the copper wiring to prevent any people from getting electric shocks in case someone tried to steal the copper.

It stands to reason that these stories on the deaths which include the actions that caused them, would serve as a determent to anyone that was even considering doing the same thing. I mean...duh. If some cannot read, there is always the News on TV. They need to ask themselves...is copper thieving worth the risk of electrocution? Stealing is never a good idea. I have not heard or read anything regarding this in my area.

People should stop taking such stupid risks. That said any loss is a saddening loss but I think the reasons need combating and it won't change. someone else will replace this person and then sadly it might and probably will happen again. ~Joey

You know the expression..wouldn't know it is it bit you in the butt? Well...it fits here. Maybe its the process of natural selection removing the TOTALLY IGNORANT from society. You can't but would like to legislate against this level of STUPIDITY

The theft of copper is happening here in Singapore too. However, so far I have no heard of any electrocution. The respective bodies are taking action to "prevent" copper from being stolen from buildings or construction sites.

It - as far as I know - hasn't happened here. I am surprised ti hasn't because so many people are stealing coppers from housing being rebuilt from Hurricane Katrina. Salvage companies that buy copper are having to keep track of who is selling it, how much they have sold, etc and check for fake ids.

Nothing needs to be done. Why should the tax payers pay more? If the people would not steal, it would not happen. Let them stay off the pole.

I have not heard of this happening in my area. My husband saves the copper pipes that he runs into at work. He gets alot in his line of work which is plumbing.

this kind of events are no rarely happening. in maximum cases in india it is seen that to protect the garden fro thief/thieves electric wwires are set up with live electricity reslting in several deaths in several areas.but to everyone surprise thieves are undaunted by such threat.they even devise many plans to succede but fail. nothing can prevent these kind of events because of competitive mind they have.the psychological factor of thieves to tell other thieves that one day will mcome when he will succede and his one day will never come. and there is no end of such events and no prevention./

I think with the state of our economy, a lot of people are going to do a lot of stupid things because they are desperate. They are so in debt with mortgages, auto loans and credit cards, and many are losing their jobs - they will do anything to get money. You would think that people would hear about the ones that are dying doing this and wouldn't attempt it!
