How many books do you own?

Just the other day, I spoke with a woman who owns 33,000 books. She has a two-story library in her home and a bookcase in almost every room of her house. Ernest Hemingway had 15,000 books at his death, a goal I have been working on surpassing. I have only a couple thousand, but my collection is growing daily. How many books do you own?

Gosh, I am so envious of her. Actually, I'm envious of you too. I think I have roughly about three hundred, but with books so expensive, it's taking a long time to build them up. I will buy used books anytime I can, though!

wow, 50 cents each. I definitely would've been building my collection more rapidly at that price! Sorry to hear your job has become a little iffy, hope things turn out ok for you.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I'm buying up as many books as I can each day!

Thanks for responding. I'm fortnate that I have a job where I can purchase books for 50 cents each. Another company just bought us, so my job is in jeopardy. Guess I'll be visiting the used book store when this job ends.

I have no idea. But on estimation, I would say it was probably between two hundred and three hundred, but I would have to record them on the computer. Anyway at two or three of them are duplicates.

A few years after I moved into this house (in 1984) I counted up over 3000 books. The numbers have only gone up from there. I probably have over 100 signed by the authors.

Anne McCaffrey, Orson Scott Card, P.N. Elrod, Robert J. Sawyer, one each by Andre Norton and Tony Hillerman. Quite a few other writers in the SF field.

How awesome! Can you do some namedropping? Which authors have signed your books?

I couldn't say for sure, but I do know the weight...about 1.5K pounds between me and the missus. This is after we got rid of 500 pounds. Unfortunately we move around a lot, so the number would have been much higher. I'm the technical reader while the missus is the fictional reader. However, some of our interests overlap. She will read the WWII history books and sometimes I'll read her M.Jordan books. However, reading fictional books tends to annoy me after a little while. As for historical/important books, I've accumulated some Congressional Records from the 1850s signed by a few Senators at that time. Between me and the missus, I think we only have eight or nine books signed by the authors or historical figures. In three years I'll retire and buy a house. Both me and the missus expects to fill a complete room of a house with books and are planning for that accordingly.

wow, 33,000! That's just amazing! I tend not to hold on to my books. I like to read them and then pass them along to someone else to enjoy. I have found that I really don't like to read the same book twice even if I really loved it. For this reason, I don't really buy a lot of books either, unless it is at a garage sale or somewhere where I can get it for considerably less expensive. I make the most use of our library as well.

Thanks for your response. I can't imagine giving away any books. I'm selfish that way. LOL!

I have about 200 of them; I had to get rid of a lot of them when I moved. I hate to throw books out so I saw them with other people. This saves a lot of money and I get to read authors that I wouldn't normally be exposed to.
