Tissues or handkerchiefs?

Here's an exciting question for you- do you prefer to use a tissue or handkerchief? When I was young, mum would always give me hankies but now that I'm older I realise I prefer tissues. Although the reason I thought of posting this discussion is because my fiance and I both get terrible allergies and we're always blowing our runny noses on tissues. I always keep my side of the bed tidy and pick up my tissues every morning but he doesn't and as a result there's about 20 crumpled up tissues on the floor and it's driving me crazy! I think I might ban tissues from our room and make him use a handkerchief instead!

I thought they were both the same thing but that shows how uneducated I am. I am kind of figuring that one is paper and the other is cloth. I much prefer tissues cos if you got a real runny nose I can only imagine how horrible a fabric one would get. I like the ones that come with balm on them cos they make your nose nice and soothed.

The worst is having to clean the hankies. Gross!

Personally, I think hankies are nasty. They carry germs and get dirty quickly. I much prefer tissues. Even if I have to carry a big box of them around, I would rather use tissues.

I agree, this is interesting. My Mum always made sure I had clean handkerchiefs too :-) I must admit though that nowadays I hedge my bets and have a clean lacy handkerchief for show but for practical purposes, especially if I have a cold, I prefer a tissue. I know that nowadays we have to be more aware of the use of paper/trees and disposal issues but I think on balance a tissue which can be burned or flushed away is more hygienic than a piece of material which festers in my bag or pocket until I can get home. As to the revolting habit of leaving tissues lying around I find persistent nagging works. It is a "broken record" technique. "you don't want to make yourself ill, do you, flush that away" every time you find a tissue does work, it doesn't make you popular but it works!

Exactly so! There should be more women Prime Ministers etc to nag the men into submission! My Other Half agrees - someone has to iron the handkerchieves after all lol.

I prefer Tissues to Handkerchiefs, becuase, as you know, tissues are more handly than the handkys. Also you can just throw the tissues away , which you cant do with the handkys. Tissues are more hygienic than the hankys because you will use a new tissue next time, but the same handky again and again.

I feel using tissues are better than handkies....Because you can disperse tissues after use...by using handkies we may get infected...

I tend to use tissues, but only the ones that are really soft and have the lotion in them, otherwise they tear up my nose! I hear you about the tissues piling up, my husband is the same way and I HATE picking them up after him--GROSS! Also, our dog tends to like to eat toilet paper and tissue, so if we throw them in the trash that she can reach, the next morning we have tissues all over the floor. Maybe I should move toward handkerchiefs as well!

as for me, handkerchiefs do better jobs than tissues. aside from being handy and the fact that you don't need to buy handkerchiefs every now and then (you just have to wash and iron them), they aren't much of a mess like tissues are. i guess your dog will not have interests with handkerchiefs than tissues... anne

I am a big tissue user. They are easy to carry around, & best of all, they can be thrown out after. I prefer the tisues with aloe vera in them, as they are gentle on my nose. My husband on the other hand, prefers hankys. I a always washing & ironing them. People give him hankies for presents, so he has heaps of them.

I prefer using tissues to a hankercgiek especially if I am having a runny nose. It so yucky having to wash the mucus filled hanky and I think it's is more hygienic to throw away the tissues after they are used.

I'm a tissue person. Of course my dad always has a hanky, but I like the tissues. They are more hygenic than hankies. Of course, if you use a lot of tissues a person needs to be vigilant in throwing them away. Left out they could spread germs, as well as being gross to look at. I'm afraid every time I go see my parents, their are quite a few used tissues sitting on the computer desk, from my mom.

I prefer to use tissues because it is meant for use and throw, thus more handy and hygienic. I use the towel type of handkerchief when I go for exercise. It is more economical as I would need lots of tissues. I only need to wash and dry the handkerchief for next reuse.

Yeah, I think I can identify with this. :) I too feel that it's more hygienic to use tissue paper than to reuse a handkerchief. So that's what I prefer to do. Tissues can be used just once and then thrown away. Then I can just take a brand new piece when I need to. I definitely prefer tissue paper for hygiene reasons.

My dad has always used a handkerchief, but I much prefer using tissues. I would rather be able to throw something like that away, rather than keeping it in my pocket all day! You might try putting a small trash can near your fiance's side of the bed. Mine is usually good about throwing away his tissues when there is a trash can nearby, and I know I'm much more likely to toss mine immediately if the trash can is within reach.

I personally prefer tissues, you use them and throw them away. Handerchiefs carry germs, and after you use them you put it back it your pocket. I think that is kind of nasty to keep reusing it until you wash it. It is too much maintenance to blow your nose in a handerchief, because you have to wash them constantly because they are filled with germs. Tissues all day.

i would prefer tissues... i hardly use handkerchiefs anyway even when i am a child... i always prefer to use tissues as i think it is cleaner and i can throw it straight away after i use it... handkerchiefs get dirty very easily and it is very inconvenient as i have to wash it after that...

LOL @ Banning tissues!!! Growing up we were made to use hankies. Now days I have my own little family and in our house we prefer to use tissues. I have seen mothers grab the inside of there sleeves, the bottom insides of there sweaters and wipe there babies noses too lol... So I guess it doesnt really matter what you use along as the mean green slimmey machine is wiped and noses are kept clean lol...
