Asking a question is usually the best way to illicit a response, for everyone looking at the discussion would then think of their answer and be more inclined to take the time to type it out. Not saying its a good thing, but it works...

It is to elicit the information from the people who participate in the discussion with their response.

There are some people who do not understand what they are to discuss unless you ask a question, pointing them in the right direction. You are correct, we can discuss things without a question. It is hard, though for some people to know where to begin. I want to welcome you to MyLot, and hope you are having a great time here. For the most part it is a friendly place, and you can learn about new things all around the world, or you can say "Coke or Pepsi" and run the risk of the discussion not staying on very long. I have looked at your profile, and you seem to post thoughtful discussions. Keep up the good work.

At one time it was said that some discussions without a question mark were more likely to be deleted. This is a forum where debating is encouraged. Asking a question is the first step in a debate. It is grammatically correct to indicate a question by the mark. If someone makes a statement the first thing that some into my mind is..SO! what do want?, what is your point?.. was this a discussion?...

That's because we are supposed to discuss... and a question starts discussion. Statements are ok as well though yes you are right, they are fewer. I have more topic questions than topic statements too. ;-)

I have never really taken much notice before, but I suppose it does make it easier for people to respond.
