I need to replace my carpet in the living room and dining room. Before it was recarpeted last time, when they lifted up the old rug there was hardwood floors that could be refinished. I like the look of hardwood floors. They seen somewhat dressier especially in a dining room. But carpet warms a house. I am torn between what to do. How many of you have hardwood floors and like them and what is the amount of maintence compared to carpeting. I think I would just do the dining room and keep the living room carpeted. What do you suggest?

We have hardwood floors im all of our house, except the dining room and kitchen, we have tile in there. I love the hardwood floors!! I do have to sweep every other day because you can see the dirt and dust on the floors, it isn't a big deal though, I guess the carpet would help hide the dirt where the hardwood doesn't =) I would go for the hardwood just because I think it is so pretty!!!

It is very hard to decide. Hardwood floors are pretty and you can use an oval rug on them for that warm feeling. I guess if you are going to entertain alot in the dining room...hard wood would be the best...but if you very seldom use it for eating, I would guess that carpeting would be alot warmer. With hardwood there is the worry about scratches but with minimal traffic that would be no problem. With carpet, after a few years it will need shampooing...then you have the problem that it will get soiled faster because the treatment will be gone. It would just depend on the use of the dining room...I defenitely would use carpet in the living room.
