A few months ago I asked if you could guess who on earth in Coronation Street in the 60s could have inspired my partner to name his pet doggie after them, when he was at the tender age 8 years. Given her screen persona I thought it was a very unusual choice and nobody guessed! It was Ena Sharples, the very strict elderly lady who ruled the Street with a rod of iron which concealed a heart of gold!

Was it a bulldog by any chance, I can remember trying to work out who it was. She had rollers and a scarf and grumpy face, with a tongue like a whiplash if I remember her correctly, I prefered Hilda, lol!

Nope, the pet was a Heinz 57. She did wear a hairnet but never rollers, that WAS Hilda lol. Ena could be very cutting and holier than though, a bit more severe than Edna in Emmerdale, but also she had a heart of gold and helped many a rogue find redemption. However, I still think it was a very odd choice of name for a pet and it makes me wonder . . .

Ooops, my only defence is that I was very young, lol! Was the dog called Ena or Sharples? Newtys black lab friend is called Beryl. Hair nets were common back then, you never see one now, or scarfs oddly. You know I love Edna on Emmerdale, but I still miss Seth, I'm going to call one of my goats Seth when I get them, lol. Nothing wrong with helping the renegades, brings a bit of light relief if nothing else, nothing more fun to watch than a cross-patch on a crousade unless it's aimed at you of course.

Yes, the elderly today tend to be a lot more modern, don't they. The dog was called Ena Sharples! I think the actress who plays Edna in Emmerdale is superb! I don't know how she keeps a straight face sometimes, as in real life she is a very nice smiley person. No, I haven't met her, but I would like to, I am just judging on interviews and TV appearances.

That is really cool. I didn't watch Coronation Street back then so I don't know who Ena was, but good for your partner naming a dog after her. She must have been a great character!
