So-called Experts

I really have a problem with how loosely the term "expert" is being used nowadays. I see a constant parade of people on talk shows, news shows, etc. They are always introduced as experts. I feel that whatever their profession, they should have to really stand out in their field before they are tagged experts. After all, anyone can consider themselves an expert-that doesn't necessarily make them an expert.

I agree with this. How many times are the experts wrong? Plenty. I am beginning to think that no one is a true expert. There is always something to learn and new problems or glitches or unexpected events can happen at any time in any field. The word expert sounds too perfect for me. I think that a person can know quite a great amount of knowledge in their chosen field, but not everything. These people look like experts because we perceive them to have much more knowledge than we do. Funny, there is no way of testing a so-called expert to see if they know as much as they appear to.

That is so right, sigma. We are supposed to just take it at face value that since someone is introduced as an expert, they really are. The term "expert" denotes someone who has racked up many, many years of experience in a particular field to me.
