My windows 98 suddenly became very slow, I check for viruses and spyware but none was reported. Windows 98 loads normally but after a while, opening applications causes the system to hang momentarily. What could be wrong!

I agree with all of the other comments. Also, how much of your harddrive is available. Is the hard drive getting full? I have seen the situation a few times where the hard drive was so full no room left for a swapfile. It also would not defrag for lack of room. The solution was to transfer an image file of the drive over to a larger drive so it had room to work.

I have 25GB Free Space on my hard drive. The Pc I use is essentially bare with MS Office and a variety of small games

You might have a lot of applications running in the background. Terminate all applications that you don't need by calling up the task manager. Or try increasing the size of your paging file.

I opened the task manager and see the usual stuff. Actually, the slow down starts whenever I open the Explorers (windows and internet). Loading of windows is normal but whenever I open the IE, boom, slow, slow, slow! U think I may have a problem with the IE?

First guess--- I'd clear out your Temp directory and the Temporary Internet files and then do a big ol defrag on your hard drive. Do a scandisk while you are at it, you could have some bad sectors on your hard disk that is trying to house some of your swap file. Scandisk should correct that...

If you have done scandisk and other scanning program and your computer still slow, i suggest you backup all your important files and do format your hardisk and a clean install of windows. And also check your memory sticks, one maybe defective.
