Does Coffee Make You Sleep Too?

Whenever I drink coffee, I have a very pleasant sleep at night without tossing and turning whatsoever. I think I am the only one in the world with this condition. Do you also sleep when you drink coffee or do you know anyone who does? I have a friend who stays awake simply by drinking tea. There was a time in school when we were studying at night and they brought some tea that the Berber people of the North African desert drink and it is guaranteed to keep any one awake. I had a little sip and well... let's just say my studies ended for that evening because I fell asleep almost faster than a speeding bullet.

It really depends on when I drink the cup of coffee. If it is in the morning as part of my breakfast, than I will generally stay awake, and get a little extra boost from it. But if it is at night, than it will knock me out pretty quickly. But I try not to drink coffee at night, because it will than cause me to wake up in the middle of the night and I will end up making a mad dash to the bathroom.

I believe it has been proven that caffeine can be given to overly hyper children to calm them down some. So I can just about see how caffeine or coffee in this case can help someone get to sleep at night. I wish I could do it every night so I could get to sleep quicker, but I don't like getting that urge in the middle of the night. Rather rude awakening when no matter how careful you try to be, but get to the bathroom quick enough, one inevitably stubs their toe for lack of being able to see appropriately.

I know that feeling of trying to get to the bathroom when you are more than 50% asleep, LOL. It could be really painful. I guess I just have a different physiology that's all.

Wow, that is good to know. I thought I was the only who sleeps sound after drinking coffee at night. But in my case, I don't wake up at night at all till morning. But on the plus side, I wake up really feeling fresh and revitalized.

lol...no you are not the only one with that condition but your story about the tea is very funny. I do have coffee in the morning and it tends to kickstart my day. If I have coffee in the evening it really does not have much effect on me at all. It does not keep me awake and I think it may actually put me to sleep quicker. I cannot really explain it either. cheers,

Yeah the foreign tea issue really got me thinking for some years. I was told that this tea was supposed to really powerful and there is no way you would sleep after drinking it. In my case it was powerful enough to make me sleep the whole night without studying. So uncool.

No,I don't think you are the only person with this condition.I'm another one:) It's said that caffein in the coffee perks people up,but everytime I drink coffee it doesn't work. One time I was going to stay up all night for the exams, then I drank a cup of coffee. You know what?I was sleepy as well.

Reverse is the case with me. I mean if i drink coffee at night than i cant sleep atleast for next 2-3 hours. So usually dont drink coffee at night. The same thing when i drink tea also. So i like drink both of them in day time only. But the coffee is helpful when i have to awake till late night to do my work. So i drink 1-2 cups of coffeee and complete my work.

I had a colleague like you when I was in school. He would only drink teas and it would keep him awake at night. I always wondered how ordinary Lipton tea would keep a person awake. But now I know he is not the only one.

Someone told me once that coffee calms people with dyslexia. My son had dyslexia and he could drink strong coffee or tea and he slept fine. :)

I love my coffee, and am in the habit of having a very small cup before bed time. But I really must be very careful, as there is no way that coffeee helps me sleep. In fact, too much coffee will not only keep me awake, but activate my bladder too much.

It seems people react to coffee in different ways. There was a response earlier where the member said she has exactly the same condition when she drinks coffee at night. It makes her dash to the bathroom very often too.

i am also like you on this,i think;) whenever i drink coffee i feel sleepy no matter whether it's daytime or the nighttime. but in my case this sleepiness lasts only for an hour, more or less. after that i m able to keep myself awake. so i avoid this sleepy hour by doing something else instead of picking up my class book;)

Wow, that is so cool. So you can actually plan on how you drink your coffee to stay awake. All you need is an hour headstart. Cool.

I drink decaf coffee, but even if I drank caffeinated, I would still be tired. Actually, I think caffeine only effects me when I drink a lot of it or in the morning. I prefer decaf though because I don't like a lot of caffeine. I believe you are right, it doesn't effect some people because we get used to it. There are so many things with caffeine in it such as chocolate and things. Have a nice day. Pablo

Hello,2wicelot,i will not drink coffee after 6 pm or so because i think the coffee wil make me awake and not able to fall asleep.i can sleep well if i drink it at the morning because the effect of caffeine has been gone during the day. Different people may be affected by caffeine to a different extent, may be you are quite resistant to caffeine and not really affected. If you really want to stay awake, you may try to have a cup of 'long black',i think you will not be able to fall asleep then.:P

Hi Easy888, I think it is not that I am resistant to caffeine but I think it affects me in a different way and that is make me sleep rather than stay awake. When I drink it at night and go to bed I sleep very sound and I wake up in the morning feeling fresh and revitalised. May be my body works in a different way.
28 Jun 07
I get this too! Coffee doesn't perk me up, it makes me want to sleep! I think it's because I'm very sensitive to caffeine - so it affects me very quickly, an then will wear off even quicker, so I get the shakes and the caffeine crash. I think I get the same sort of effect as a sugar crash - when you eat sweet foods and get a sugar ruch, and then your body crashes and gets fatigued. My boyfriend always tells me to drink coffee when I'm tired during the day, and I always tell him it will just send me to sleep! I'll feel more awake if I just drink a glass of water! :o)

This is nice to know. At least I am not the only one with this "condition". When I drink coffee at night I sleep sound without tossing or turning or dreaming. When I wake up in the morning I feel very refreshed and revitalised. But then sometime during the day I get tired and just crash and want to sleep again.

Hey 2wicelot I will sleep with it as well. I had someone over and he had coffee and said he walked the town all night cause of it.LOL I slept good! Hehehe. I laughed at him and so did my hubby. My husband drinks tea all day and night up to the time he goes to bed and he normally sleeps well. Sometimes he will get up in the middle of the night for a while but not too often! :)

I guess people react differently to coffee. But I have a feeling the majority of people stay awake after drinking it. As for us, I think we can only stay awake naturally.

Drinking coffee definitely does not help me stay awake at all. If I'm sleepy, I would just sleep regardless. But then again, I am like you as well, I usually sleep better with coffee too.. It just relaxes me alot. However, since I'm expecting my second child I try to cut down on my coffee intake because I feel so dehydrated. In general though, hot drinks really relaxes me. It doesn't affect my sleeping pattern at all.

I guess i am on that on eof a kind too. I noticed that the effect of caffeine on our body could be different from anyone. People said that drinking coffee keeps you awake but in my case it's not. last Night, we had a coffee fellowship and while drinking coffee I keep on yawning too, my friends find it weird and I do too.
@2wicelot (2945)

I drink coffee and all kinds of caffienated beverages all day and don't have a problem sleeping at all. I have already drank coffee before I went to bed and fallen asleep immediately. It doesn't put me to sleep, but it doesn't keep me awake either.

I am the opposite. When I drink coffee, it's likely that I will stay up at night. So I don't drink the coffee any more now. I am afraid that I can't sleep at night.

I drink coffee once a day, and this does not keep me awake all day. If a person drinks coffee more than 2 cups a day, I think the caffeine content he drank will make him awake.
