my 9 month old is teething. he has one tooth on top and 3 more that we can see coming. he was fine with the first one and my other 2 boys never got sick or anything with any of theirs. the problem is he is misrable and has a running stuffy nose so i have been giving him meds for that but what can i do to stop him from crying in pain? i have no baby stuff for his teeth and my hubby has a 24 hour sift and won't be home till 9 tomarrow morning. is there anything that i might have here in the house that would help? i tried the cold cloth and teething rings and everything else i could think of. please any ideas

Aretha, first take solice, that I am with you. My son is the same age, and just got four teeth on top (all pretty much at the same time) and is now getting some more bottom teeth (he already had 2). Here are some suggestions, try an ice cold carrot, they love to gnaw on it, just watch him like a hawk, as they can often bite into it. I like to put mine at the highchair with it, and I'll sit next to him flipping through a magazine, that way i'll hear him if he bites some off. Distraction, works well, if he loves baths, why not give him one.. even if it's the middle of the day, and you have nowhere to go. If it's nice outdoors, take him outside to let nature soothe him. cold, frozen washcloths. Med's (I'm sure you know all about those though). If you have any biter biskets on hand.. my son loves those. As far as sleeping, I find that my little one sleeps best on an incline while he is sleeping, so I put a couple pillows under the mattress, (just not too high, otherwise he'll just roll down it) (: It helps him sleep much deeper. Also, if it persists, watch for signs of an ear infection, as my oldest always got one while he was teething and had a cold.. all that fluid building up.. Hope I gave you some ideas.. Hang in there.. you know from expierence that it will get better soon.. hopefully (: My little guy only had about a week's break between these teething bouts.. He already has 6 teeth, and he's working on number 7 and 8 right now.. hopefully he'll give me a break after that! (:

also, forgot to add, that for his congestion, a bath of course works great, or just taking him into the bathroom to clear out the passageways, and help things drain a bit, right before bed, so hopefully he'll sleep better. Good luck!

I meant to say, take him into the bathroom with the hot shower on.. to create steam, to help clear out his passageways.. (;

i am getting ready now to take him to the doctors,he started pulling on his ear last night so i am a little worried. hes been so different then my older two,with them i never knew they were teething until the tooth was there. neither of my oldest has ever had an ear infection either. i've been lucky i know. we've done the baths and they are about the only thing that worked. so last night he had two 40-45 minute baths. plus hes had another this morning. we tried the cold cloth and he wanted nothing to do with it. we also tried the biter biskets and he didn't want that. we tried the ice cream and he was good for about 10 minutes but then he didn't want that. so so far the only thing thats helped is me holding him on the porch or the tub. he is doing a little better this morning but still whinning. we do the bathroom thing all the time.lol we all of us,my mom told me to do it with my oldest and i have done it ever sense with all of them. its the only good part of having a small bathroom. we have play time in there the kids love it. we take some toys and just sit and play. the kids think its great and not only one can go they all have to be in there. 8 teeth!? mine has one so far. all of my kids got their teeth later then most kids. your poor little man i wish they would come up with something for this to help soothe them. thank you a bunch you have been wonderful

Something sweet and cold usually worked wonders with my son who suffered terribly with every tooth. If you don't have ice pops in the house, then make your own with some apple juice. You can make them in regular ice cube trays and when they are frozen, pop them out and crush them up for him. He can suck on them and the frozen juice will help temporarily numb his gums and reduce the swelling a little. If you have any baby Ibuprofen or baby Tylenol that coupled with the frozen treats will at least temporarily relieve his discomfort.

we tried the ice pops and he didn't want anything to do with them. i had been giving him tylenol but it didn't seem to matter with him. finally the bath work at least while he was in so we took two 45 minute tubs last night in the sink and he was loving it. thanks for the advice

I think having doctors advise in this difficult situation is better,please consult your doctor immediately it may help kids crying in pain.

i am going to take him to the doctors today at 2pm because he has been pulling at his ear but if it just teething they won't do anything. they might just tell me to give some pain releiver. his doctor prob wouldn't even see him just for that. to get him to see a doctor you have to talk to a nurse and they decide if its bad enough they need to be seen. thanks for the response

I know this is too late to help, but if you get the chance, go to Walmart and ask the pharmasist about something for teething. It is a liquid that you put on the babies gums and it really helps. I used it for my 4 kids and it worked wonders.

i know what your talking about,i never got it because my older kids never needed it and my hubby had to work a 24 hour shift last night so i had no way to get any but you can bet i will be getting some today weather i need it or not. with my oldest two i made sure i had it and never knew they were cutting teeth until they had them so i ended up throwing it out. i think things may be a little different with this one. thanks a bunch

Well, there's always baby paracetamol, i think you guys over there use Tylenol or something, try that, otherwise, i'm not really sure. I can understand though, when you cut 1 tooth, it's easier to handle than 3 at once. My daughter had her dummy/pacifier which helped her teething HEAPS - something soft to chew/suck on, i also make sure all the liquids she has when she's teething are warm coz that seemed to help her. The teething might not be making him sick either - i think maybe he could have a cold & that is upsetting him, the teething is just making it worse. I know some kids get fevers & stuff but i have never heard of a child actually getting sick so maybe he's caught something & the teething is making him more miserable. Good luck!

I have experienced the same thing with my youngest. Honestly, the only thing that made her calm down was vanilla ice cream! I know he might be too young, but it helps to sease the pain. I also would just turn on the music and carry her to sleep. I think that the music helps to soothe them while rocking them in your arms. I wish I could tell you something more, but that is all I have experienced. Good Luck:)

I don't know, because I never had children, but on the Roseanne show they used frozen waffles on one episode. They said that the little squares could even catch the siliva.

the very best for me was beef jerky. the salt helps and they love the taste.
