Why are people so concerned about the afterlife?

More specifically, why are so many people fearful and threatened by the prospect of there being no afterlife? If you die, and there just so happens to be no afterlife, I promise: you won't be concerned or disappointed! (no disrespect- just a general incapacity to understand this idea).
