How often do you shop for groceries?

As a working mom, I got into the habit of doing all of my grocery shopping once a week on my day off. I get up early on Saturday morning and off I go to fill up my car with enough groceries to last us through the week. Obviously, if everyone did this the grocery stores would not have much business the rest of the week. So, when and how often do you do your grocery shopping?

i get paid once a month and hubby gets paid every 2 weeks, so thats when we go, if we are out of something towards the end of that time period, we make due without... we also plan the meals (generally) which we are going to eat for the next two weeks we generally shop on the friday evening or saturday morning at some point...

Wow, planning meals for 2 weeks at a time. I have enough of a problem planning for 1 week at a time. Friday nights I am too tired after working all week; I just want to go home and relax. So I just leave my alarm set for the same time I usually get up for work and I go shopping Saturday morning. Also, in the summer, the temperatures get up over 120 degrees here; so, it is cooler to shop in the morning.

I shop daily or at least every other day. I do have stores whithin walking distance and I like to buy things fresh. I like real fresh milk and fruit and vegetables. I like to think every day: what do I want to cook today, what do I want to eat. Well, then I go out and buy it in small quantity. So I always cook and eat with good appetite and the fresh things are healthier than old stale food.

You are so lucky. The closest store to my home is 14 miles away. But, doesn't buying small quantities cost you more? I have found that a quart of milk costs almost as much as a gallon. My family will use a gallon a week; so buying 4 separte quarts costs a lot more.

Most of our grocery shopping is done by my husband, because he works at a store and thus can just pick things up before he leaves. It makes things a lot easier because I can always just ask him for an item or two, though I'm sure it gets annoying for him being asked for things so often. I have been doing more grocery shopping than usual in the past few months because my doctor put me on a restricted diet for health reasons, and I've had to do a lot of label-reading. In this case I usually go when I also need prescriptions, so that I can take care of everything at once.

Label reading does take a lot of time when you are shopping. I have allergies myself and have to be sure they haven't added something I can't eat safely. You are very lucky your husband works at the store though. A lot of the stores give employee discounts and I am sure that helps out.

*nods* I have to contend with food allergies as well. It's amazing to me how many random things I have found mushrooms in! And now my doctor has taken me off dairy as well, which is driving me bonkers because I can't have cheese. This on top of trying to eat low sodium, which is difficult if you like anything bought prepared or quick-prep! Darn health stuff anyway, huh? =p Getting a discount on items like food and other necessities is pretty awesome. The other thing it really helps us on is things like diapers for our son. I never realized how expensive things like that were before I had a child!

If you have food allergies, you also need to keep an eye out for anything with "free glutamate" (commonly referred to as MSG). Even if you are NOT allergic to MSG; Johns Hopkins Medical Research did a study and found out that anyone who is having an allergic reaction and consumes food or beverage with glutamate - it makes their allergic reaction 150% stronger. So, your reaction is worse. Rashes become hives; a headache becomes a migraine; etc. Here is a link to foods that contain glutamate: http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html It is impossible to completely eliminate all of them; but, I did reduce how much I eat of these and it DID help my allergies.

I usually go shopping about once a week. I'm only shopping for myself so I don't really have to plan it that much. I usually go afterwork and very rarely will I go on weekend because the stores are croweded and often the store is out of things because everyone is doing their shopping then. Often though I will have days off during a normal weekday. These are the days I prefer to shop because the stores are much less busy and usually well stocked.

Well, if I had a day off on a weekday; I would probably go then too. You are right about the stores being less crowded then; at least during the day. That is why I go early Saturday morning; because, a lot of people would rather sleep in and the stores have usually just got done stocking for the weekend.

I Usually do a big grocery shop once a fortnight but of late because we are about to move house I am actually shopping for what I need every day, I really dont know which one I prefer to do as yet. I usually only work one day a week so I have alot of time with my daughter and we like to go for walks so it works out well for us! When you say if everyone did this then the grocery shop wouldnt have much business, where I live alot of people are shift workers including myself and my partner so everyone has different days off including during the week so I guess the supermarkets would still have customers during the week

Good point about people working different shifts and having different days off. In my town, approximately 85% of the workers are off on Sat and/or Sun., so that leaves about 15% who would have their "weekend" during the week. There would still be shoppers during the week; just not as many. OF course, there are the retired people who do not work, but, they can choose to go any or every day of the week if they want.

For the dry goods, like dishwashing liquid, detergents, toothpaste, canned food, and all other household needs, i go once a month.. usually at the end of the month when my husband's pay comes in.. and for the fresh produce i usually go every week. Usually on the days where my husband gets his off days after working shifts.. I don't work so it's whenever my husband is free.. i don't mind going by myself but my husband prefers to go with me.. maybe so i don't spend on unnecessary items.. like snacks.. :)

With my husband; he is the "impulse buyer". So even though it would be nice to have the help and the company; I am glad he does not normally go shopping with me. We would end up with a lot of "junk food" and not enough real food to last the week if he went with me every week.

I usually go grocery shopping twice a week: Tuesday and Saturday or Sunday. I go to different stores each day: Tuesday I get a 5% discount in a supermarket in everything I buy and in the weekend I go to a different supermarket to buy certain items that get discounts ranging from 10% to 15%.

Our stores don't have discounts; but, they do have sales. I try to take advantage of those sales as much as possible. So, sometimes I go to several stores in one day to get the best deals.

I go once a week, when hubby is off. It is too hard for me alone. And sometimes I need extra things during the week, so he or I will get them.

You are lucky he helps you with the shopping. My husband doesn't help until I get home with the groceries. Then he helps unload the car and take care of things.

I shop once a week. The day varies depending on schedules. I was shopping every Tuesday for awhile, then Wednesday, then Thursday, now I'm shopping on Fridays. Things just get in the way and I have to alter my schedule. Unfortunately I buy way too much sometimes. Today was a bad day - over $200 - but that was because we were having a birthday party so it included 3 bottles of pop, hot dogs and buns, 3 bags of chips and cake mix. Still, I think the cost was a bit much for what little I really did buy. But then, maybe I won't have to shop at all next week.

I know; it is so easy to overspend when you're shopping. We have just the three of us and 2 cats and we easily spend $130 or more each week.

I do my big weekly shopping every Wednesday because Krogers give a senior discount of that day of the week. Occasionally I do have to go back for something i have forgotten.

We don't have a Krogers in my town and I wouldn't quality for a "senior discount" yet anyway. The only discounts our stores give is a discount on prescriptions for seniors- when the store has a pharmacy.

I shop once a week for groceries on weekend.Sometime we do shop on week day when we run out of some groceries sooner then we expected Such as eggs and vegetables.

Usually, if I am going to run out of something during the week it is fresh fruit. Some weeks they barely eat any fruit and other weeks they just make the fruit disappear in a day or two.

We have just moved into town, and I find myself going to the grocery store at least twice a week! I hate that! I just bought a meat bundle from the small grocer in our town, and there is enough meat to last us a month. I am going to start stocking up on non-perishables this coming month, and hopefull cut it down to just one trip a week to buy staples and lunch stuff for my son and husband. I hate going to the big grocer in our town and prefer to shop at the small one where they know me. But, there are a lot of things that the small store does not carry. I would love to be able to just go once a month, but with my family I know that will never happen.

I know what you mean. When you first move in your pantry is bare and it takes a while to get some things "stocked up" so you aren't running to the store everytime you want to make something. But, once a month shopping, that would be too much planning for me to do ahead. I think I would still end up going at least once a week, just to get the things I forgot or ran out of.

Normally, I do my shopping once a week. Since I am not working anymore, I do my groceries when my husbands receives his paycheck. Comment on the every 2 weeks grocery? Well for me it doesn't work. Why? I have child who is a healthy eater hence whenever she sees something to eat she goes for it thus making the 2 weeks budget a 1 week budget.

With me it is my husband. He gets what he calls "cravings" and he will eat everything that matches his "craving" in one sitting - even if it was enough to last a couple of weeks normally. It can be very frustrating when you have a plan for using a particular item and it is suddenly GONE.

I occasionally will forget something and have to go back later; but, that is usually because my family forgot to put an item on my list. I keep a magnetic grocery pad on my refrigerator. Everyone is supposed to put on any item: they want, they used the last of, or we are almost out of. That way on Friday night it only takes me a few minutes to complete the list. I really hate it when I come home from shopping and THEN they tell me we are out of something.

I usually shop once every two weeks. Theres only 4 of us living here so I can do the shopping for two weeks at a time. Its also easier. Although you still have to take an ocasional trip to get milk or bread.

Sunday afternoon I am usually doing laundry and preparing for a big Sunday dinner. I have split up my weekend into shopping on Saturday and cleaning on Sunday. After I finish grocery shopping in the morning and have everything back home and unpacked; I do other shopping Sat afternoon (garage sales, thrift shops, shopping for clothes, etc.).

I only have time to go once a week to the grocery store. I basically replenish all the breakfast, snack and dinner items for the week and get fresh fruit and vegetables. I really don't have time to make frequent trips although I do know people who shop every day and only buy what they need for that day.

To be honest, now I go grocery shopping whenever I've run out of food to eat in the house. When I was younger, say 13 or 14, I would follow the routine of doing weekly $40 grocery shopping, but now I've become lazy. Sometimes I'll pick up fruits from the fruit stands on the street on my way home from hanging out, though, and other times I'll stop by the Chinese supermarket near the subway for quick $10 shopping, but nothing planned or major.
