When I was pregnant 12 years ago I had scans but the hospital staff were not allowed to tell me the gender. Last year I became pregnant again and had a gender scan at 17 weeks. My baby turned out to be a boy. I liked finding out because it helped with my shopping for baby clothes. Have you had a gender scan when pregnant? Do you plan to have one during your pregnancy? Is is right of offer gender scans? Why? Why not?

I think it's a good idea to do that if one doesn't have any malicious intension towards any of the gender because some people have preferance and when they scan and it tend to be the opposite and that might lead them to abort it. Just as you've mentioned, what gender was your first child? you can also prepare for whatever future for that child though.....,

Yes, I think it is just nice to know but it does not really matter if a baby is a boy or girl. My first child is also a boy. Some time on the next few years it would be lovely to have another baby. The 12 year gap between my boys is quite a lot. I think a 2 year gap between children is ideal. Many thanks for your superb response.

Making it's mark to the world. - Simply amazing shot don't you reckon?
I think it is the best thing the gynae can do for you. Knowing the gender helps you ease the tension of pregnancy. You do not have to anticipate of keep guessing if the baby is a boy or a girl. Of course there are many who wants not to be told of the baby's gender. They like the excitement. For me, the more i know about my baby, the better i feel about myself.

Thank you very much for the best response. I had gender scans for both my boys. And i've never regretted it. I was definitely hoping for a girl the second time round. Nonetheless, they are both a blessing to hubby and i. - Lyn

I think it's important to know the gender of the baby ahead of time so that the baby can be named, and never hear people refer to her/him as "it" or "the baby" etc. I would want to choose a name for my baby right away, and name the baby, so when the baby comes up in conversation a real name is used instead.

Yes, it is lovely to be able to say 'he' or 'she' instead of 'it'. We still didn't find the right name for our baby boy until after he was born.

wow - first of all congrats on hitting the 1000th post mark! that's my next aim! Your kids have a large age gap eh? guess there's nothing like having a baby in your arms again. Personally i've always thought it would be more fun not to know the gender. As it was in ancient times before all this modern ultrasound technology. but you're right it helps in the picking of clothes. and the mental preparation for which child you're going to bring up. :)

I think that gender scans are a great thing to offer, for those who want to know for such reasons as baby clothes/nursery painting etc. Personally, I'm not into traditional gender roles, so my child would have somewhat unisex clothes and toys, and therefore I'd just want the joy and surprise of finding out when I gave birth.

It is a good thing maximax8,to know and accept the gender of your unborn child! You dont seem to tell us why the hospital staff was not allowed to tell you the gender of your child 12 years ago, but last year you were able to know it was a boy? To me scanning only becomes a moral issue when on knowing this gender, the concerned couples move ahead to terminate the pregnancy just because they wanted a particular gender! I know in some countries today like Pakistan, India or even Africa, boys are prefered to girls and this has led to mass termination of female unborn children after a scan! This is a time bomb that will never be forgiven by posterity! Imagine a world where there are only men without enough women to marry-nature was not unreasonable to balance the gender-infact it would make big sense for women to be more than men because some culture allow the marrying of more than one wife! Prefering a particular gender over the other will obviously throw our demorgrahy into disarray!

For me, no I dont like them, I would not want to find out. The surprise factor is just too much for me. You cant beat it.
