My 14 y/o rat terrier started coughing last night , turned her head around and then went limp. Then she urinated on the couch. I thought she was okay after that but last night she wet the bed. She's not done that before. I dropped her off at the vet and they will check her today. Does anyone know what this could be? Do these symptoms sound familiar to you? I know she is old so I guess I should expect some health problems. She does have allergies but everything else has always been normal.

It looks like canine kidney failure. I think that vet will do the right test to check for kidney failure. It is commonly seen in elderly dogs and thought to be part of the aging process. It can be also related to dogs flu or food poison. She should be on low protein and fluid therapy. Hope she is going to be OK.

This discussion was in my email box on March 14 as "new". I responded directly from my email, sorry. Today I noticed that this discussion is 9 months old.

That's okay and yes she is doing fine now...well except that she is older and not getting around as well but she's 15 now so that's to be expected.

I am sorry to hear about your dog, I do hope she's ok. I would be beside myself if anything happened to my pets, they are like my kids. She is an older dog and things tend to happen at that age. My uncle's dalmation once he got to be about 12 started losing control of his bladder often and would go limp and wasn't able to keep down food. The vet said the dog initally had a stroke. I hope your dog isn't suffering from anything serious. Keep us posted.

She seems better now. She was coughing a lot last night but I think that is just the medicine loosing up her congestion. She seems good this morning.

It must be a virus or a bacterium infection. As she such old her immunity is weaker. Her health needs more care.

You're probably right, Dolcerina. She has always had problems with allergies. I think that is what caused her bronchitis.

Well it turns out that she has bronchitis. She also has a leaky heart valve, which we just need to watch for now. I have to give her some medication for the bronchitis. I didn't even know that dogs got bronchitis.

I'm so sorry to know that your dog was sick. I know how it feels to have to worry about your beloved dog. It's a good thing that you brought her to the vet to check her up. I didn't know that dogs get bronchitis, too.

I didn't either. I knew they could have allergies but not bronchitis. This was the first I had heard of it.

I wonder if it was a seizure? I sure hope she's OK. I have 2 rat terriers too.

That's what it seemed like to me too. I have another dog that has seizures. She is doing better now though..hasn't had anymore. Rat terriers are great dogs, aren't they?

You should take her to the vet. She might have something seriously wrong with her. Since she is old, she might be having a stroke and she has lost control of her bladder. If the vet finds that she is okay and that it is not age related, then he will give you some medication. I find that dogs love peanut butter, and you can cover the medicine with that or break it up into her food.
