Were you embarassed by your parent's car?

When I was a little kid my mom had a hideous beige color Dodge 1970's car. And, I always hated it when she pulled up in front of our elementary school driving that beige monster. It looked like a big rolling bowl of oatmeal. Not a pretty sight. What about you? Were you embarrassed by your parent's car when you were a kid? Or, if you are still a kid, does your parent's car still embarrass you?

oh yeah I have to admit some of the vehicles my father drove me to school in were really embarssing. Like he had a mail van a van that use to deliver mail from a long time ago that he drove. I hated to go to school in that van. That was years ago like in the 80's but it's still something to remeber though.

it was a big mail van he had I can't remeber if it did or not I just know I hated riding in it. He also drove a mail jeep that he bought. That wasn't quite as bad.

You mean, those tiny mail vans? Wow! I haven't seen one of those in years. The local mail delivery lady drives her own car to deliver mail. I wish they'd bring back the tiny mail trucks. Those were so cute. Guess I would feel differently if my mom had driven me to school in one. Do they have seatbelts?

Well my mom has a 10 year old beige Camry but it still is beautiful although i would like her to trade it in for a new Nissan Altima or even better an Infiniti G35. I am never embarassed but before she had a rusty 12 year old Honda Accord which was embarassing, and then it blew up!! well the engine caught on fire but slowly so my mom didn't get hurt but the fire trucks had to come.

That totally happened to my spouses car. He was driving home from work, and his engine caught on fire. He just pulled the car to the side of the road and abandoned it, and walked home. Of course he made sure the fire was out first. That was not a good year for us.

When I was in highschool and could not drive my dad would take me to school and pick me up. He drove this ugly 1989 tan caprice classic chevrolet. It was loud and big and the inside ceiling fabric was hanging down. It was so embarrassing. Sometimes I would make him drop me off a block away from school and I would walk the rest of the way.

That's too hilarious! I wish I'd been old enough to make my mom do that! I can just imagine the look on her face.

No I wasn't, but I probably should have been now that I think about it. But then again, that's all she could afford. Although, on the other hand, I went camping with my sister and her husband a few weeks ago and was very embarassed by their vehicle. They can afford better, but are not very good with their money. Picture this, white early 1990's Plymouth Voyager. Red hood, front fender and tailgate. Sunvisor emblem reads "REDNECK".

Well, my mom had a little green mini and she used to load all of my sister's netball team in there and off we would go to netball in that green mini. It was great fun. We would have tons of fun in that car. We use to drive everywhere and anywhere in that car. It was a very sad day when my mom eventually sold her. We loved her so much... was never embarrassed by her... not that I can remember anyway!!!!LOL

Yip absolutely! No regrets and no embarrassments that are not funny now and great stories to tell the kids. I loved the good old days.

Some of the best childhood moments happen in cars with friends. I am happy to hear that you have fond memories of those times.

My mom drove a 1966 Chevy Biscayne, it kinda looked like the Impala, different tail lights. The car was white, but everytime you touch it the chaulk like paint would be on your hands. It was old and beat up. I liked it, I don't think I was embarassed by it though.

That kind of car would be a classic these days. People pay lots of money for classics. Our car back in the 1970's was practically new, and already looked bad. But, honestly, the interior was pretty nice and it was roomy. Very practical for hauling the kids around I am sure. But that oatmeal brown color was horrible. No style at all.

when I was a kid, my stepfather drove a old yellow Chevy Nova..I didn't know the year of the car..let's just say you could hear it before you saw it..it wasn't any type of yellow, it was a bright banana yellow..he used to pick me up from school and the kids would pick on me until he pulled off...I was so glad when he got arrested and the car got impounded..when he came home and said someone bought it in an auction, I almost cried with joy...

Back then cars in general were not all that great so i was not embarrassed as some people might be. Cars now are so much nicer and have more features than those really old cars in the 70's and 80's. My parents cars back then were ugly looking and had very few features but was not embarrassed to be seen in them. It took a long time before my parents got newer cars and was glad when they did get new cars.

Yes I have been embarrassed by the parents car! We had an old Volkswagen Rabbit that dad would constantly drive till it would be dirty, rusted and total $#!t ! I would get so embarrassed by that vehicle;. Geez. I,m grown up now and now they have had about 2 nice vehicles since. They didn,t run those into the ground, thank god.

Actually, in my high school and middle school years my mother drove a Lincoln Town Car. It didn't occur to me to care about what my family drove, but I have this distinct memory of this kid at school that had harassed me a lot (I wasn't a very popular kid) telling me that he thought my mom's car was cool and he didn't bother me so much after that.

I was very proud that my parents could afford a car. When my father bought his first car in 1962 it was a brand new VW beetle and not every family had a car then. We went on many trips, I have very good memories. Somewhen in the 70th my mom got a car, too. It was a Fiat and bright red, a sports version. These were their first cars and the follow up cars were better and better.

My parents could not afford a car when we were young. But, now we have a camry. I love camry and they are the best when it comes to maintenance and comfort.

Do they still make Camry's? I have been looking around for a small to mid size car that I can drive that won't have too much power. I like the maintenance aspect. Our current monster goes through $1200 or more in repairs every year. It's very antiquated.

I never gave it a thought to what my parents drove. looking back they drove some pretty good beaters. We only had one car in our family and my dad usually took it to work. My brothers and I pretty much walked wherever we wanted to go. we were always too grateful when a ride was available to even notice what the car looked like. it was not an issue. my girls however for some god forbidden unknown reason have been embarrassed by some of the cars i have had. I remind them that this hunk of junk is getting them to where they want to be...they could walk. It is all peer pressure. As they got older and had to buy their own vehicles, they have I noticed lowered their standards.

Yes, kids often bend to peer pressure. But, when they have to fork over the cash to buy something of their own, they suddenly develop a frugal more sensible side. I have experienced that in my own life. I am sure my own daughter will more than pay me back for the years of embarrassment I felt when i was a kid. She has pretty high standards.

Hey, be glad that you have a family care. I do not have the privillage of even going onto a car as much as others does. Most of the time, I would be taking public transport by myself. I guess beige sounds a little conservatively, Bright color for the older people. But at least its still bright. How I wished I have a car soon so that I can drive my parents around, by then, I guess they would say that I am embarassing them in front of their friends with my uber cool car.

Well, my parent's car no longer embarasses me, but it certainly did when I was a kid. It was held together by duct tape in places. Also, everytime it stopped it would stall and they could not get it restarted. This happened in the middle of a few traffic jams at rush hour ! Not too pleasant. cheers,

There's nothing wrong actually with my mom's car before but it was the engine that embarrass me. Because it would just stop in the middle of anywhere that would traffic, that cause me embarrassment.

Oh boy... I still remember that miniscule red Mini Morris my mom had... it looked like a toy or something. Had so many problems, that my dad sold it and bought my mom a brand new Seat Ibiza. The Mini's next owner crashed it and became scrap.
