Did anyone watch the national hot dog eating contest on tv? I saw it yesterday and just can't understand how eating hot dogs as fast as you can is considered a sport. They even went as far as to describe the techniques they use~ break in 1/2, dip in water, eat hot dog and bun seperately! They see how many hot dogs they can eat in 12 minutes. These contestants weren't even heavy! The winner was from Tokyo and I think he ate 56 hot dogs in the 12 minutes. They all looked like they were going to get sick. I actually was feeling sick just watching. What do you think about sports like this? Have you heard of any other weird things that are considered a sport?

In Laredo, Texas they have the Jalapeno festival. They eat jalapeno peppers and the winner is the one who eats the most. I wonder how hot they end up with this contest! I used to live in Laredo for about 7 years and would go to this festival, but now we moved back to our home town.

OMG~ that would be very interesting to see. Do they eat them with anything to cut the hotness?

They eat it just by themselves. They can have water on the side, though.

I know it's not a sport, but how cool is it that really skinny dudes from Japan beat the fat guys from the US, it's crazy that they can eat that much and not put on weight... I wonder whats going on in their tummys... dont wanna think about it!

I was amazed to see that the winner was the skinny guy from Japan. I just found out that I was watching last years competition. The winner from this year was another skinny guy but he was from the USA. I do believe that they consider this a sport.

I am with you on this one...I do not really consider this a sport. I have always looked at things like this as very wasteful. There are many people in the world who do not have enough/anything to eat, and some people look at a hot dog eating contest as an amusing sport. Just does not seem right to me. cheers,

Seriously~ they could have fed a whole village somewhere with the amount of hot dogs eaten in just that 12 minutes. That is a great point.

I watched the rerun of this last night at a restaurant. It made me lose my appetite, its so gross how they just cram the hot dogs in their mouth. and the dipping in water! Gross! I dont think this should be considered a sport but a contest, which is what it is. I understand they have to train and prepare for it but I do not see this as a sport.

It made me sick to my stomach watching it also. Just the thought of eating buns dipped in water is gross enough, but stuffing them in your mouth one after the other~ yuck.
