Another 6 Canadians die in Afghanistan!! Is it for nothing?

I realize Canada is in Afghanistan as part of the commitment to Nato and the UN. What I don't understand why we don't let that country fight their own battles. Obviously we are not wanted, Western style democracy is not wanted. Many of the new infraxtructures that we build are sabotaged and destroyed. Ordinary people protect the Taliban and supply them with the necessities of life, otherwise they could not survive. Western forces are mistrusted. So we should leave them to their fate. What saddens me the most though if we finally pull out the fate of women will be brutal again. They will be thrown back into slavery. I wish there was a solution to this mess. I am so sad and cry each time when another young person looses his/her life and ask myself if their sacrifice was in vain.

I have been thinking a lot about this after yesterdays events. I think after our committment is over, we should get out of there, and let some of the other NATO countries take over. It is a country of 30 million people where 30 percent of them want to kill us. I don't know what the answer is. I do think we have to be offensive, and try to stop those people, or we're even in more trouble.

Yes, I think once our committment is over we should get out of there. It would be different if the Afghans would long for freedom but apparently too many want the old cruel oppresive regime back and support the insurgents. If you look at the Afghan landscape you realize the Taliban could not survive out there in those barren lands unless the locals supplied them with the necessities of life.

I get quite annoyed when people start whining about military losses. Let's not forget that we are at war whether we like it or not. Therefore, we must expect casualties. I will say, however, that it is about time another NATO country took over for us - we've done our part as far as I'm concerned. With this in mind, I will continue to pray for our soldiers to make it home safely to their families.

Why are we at war? The point I am trying to make is that we loose our bright young people in a country where we are not wanted. It would be easier to bear if the people of Afghanistan were clamouring for democracy and freedom. Obviously a large segment of the population is not. So even if other countries step up and honour their committment to Nato they will suffer losses. Those countries should settle their own differences. They did not invade us. Yes and I too hope and pray that our wonderful men and women make it home safely, every one of them.

Lindalinda, while it is true that Afghanistan did not invade Canada, and while it may be true that not all Afghans appreciate the opportunity to set up a democratic state, I think we are at war because the Taliban was allowing terrorist training camps to operate in absolute freedom within Afghanistan, and the people trained there were going to export terror to the whole world. Therefore, it was necessary to shut them down. I agree with you that other nations should honor their NATO commitment and get involved there.

Thankyou, deanna, that was my point exactly about being at war. War now is just not the same as it was during the World wars even up to Desert Storm. After that, everything we once new about war completely changed.
