How do I keep the bugs away?

A Mosquito - The horrible things (you can't even call them little anymore, they are getting huge) are the bane of my existance.

Can anyone please give me any tips or tricks that they know of, other than regular bug spray, to help keep bugs that bite (mosquitos and black flies and anything like that). I have heard of taking garlic to keep fleas from biting you if your animals get fleas but I do not know if that really works, or if it helps with any bugs other than fleas. I have an allergy to black flies and mosquitos, one bites me and I get a huge lump, right now I have one by my eyebrow and it looks like I was hit with a small hammer. I have already eliminate bananas from my diet entirely until the bug season is over but I need more protection that just that. I wish I could find something I could take that would make me repulsive to bugs (but not to animals or humans) so they ould not even want to bite me. Please people, give me some tips, I don't want to spend the summer dressed in mosquito netting.

I have considered this and do plan to try to reduce the areas on our property for them to spawn in but the thing is, we will arrive at our new home and there will be no bugs in the yard at all at first, within half an hour of me sitting outside they arrive. It's like they sniff me out and hunt me down.

I dont know any good tricks other than using bug spray. The other day my daughter and I were outside and I sprayed her whole body with bug spray so they dont bite her but later on that night I saw she had got bitten by one on her eyebrow which caused her eye to swell shut. Of course I go into panic mode because she is my first child so Im freaking out and later we find out its "just" a mosquito bite which there isnt much a doctor could do for that so I was really upset at those dam mosquitos for making my daughters eye look horrible...I swear it looks like she got into a fight (shes only 4) So If you get any good tips please let me know so I can atleast try them with my daughter.

The only thign I know of so far is to take benedryl cram and gob it onto the spot and then cover it with a bandaid. The benedryl cream takes the itch away and brings the swelling down a bit but only if you really gob it on and then cover it so it can't rub off. Also the bandaid keeps me from scratching at it and making it worse. I cam eup with this on my own. I an hoping to find a way to just keep them from biting me, or maybe to take away the allergy.

Good responses from the other posters so far. I'd like to add that I use Avon's Skin So Soft. Many years ago I had a set of friends that were always having evening BBQ's, everybody always was asking me why I wasn't as bothered by the mosquitos as much as they were. I used to spray the Skin So Soft on exposed areas of my skin, and it worked really well. I always keep a small spray bottle of it in my car, just in case I'm out somewhere in the evening and I need it, lol. I've read that some people also use it on their horses and dogs (etc) to help keep the skeeters and bugs off. I usually buy it when they have their 2 for 1 price special, and only buy it once a year. I very rarely ever use bug spray with the deet in it, and only choose to do so if I don't have the other around.

Okay that sounds like a good idea. I love body care products anyhow. Is it the body spray (like perfume) of the body oil spray? And is it all the Skin So Soft sprays or just the original scent?
