It is more than fortyeight hours since I opened a new discussion in mylot. I was spinning my head for an attractive topic. Suddenly the dictionary resting on my desk attracted my attention. I mostly everyday refer my dictionary. It is the DK illustrated Oxford dictionary, a hardbound edition. I also have a Learner's dictionary, a Pocket Oxford dictionary and a Chambers dictionary. When I travel I carry the pocket dictionary with me. Now how about you? Do you have a dictionary? Do you refer it regularly? Do you refer it to know word meanings only or to confirm spellings also? Which is your favorite dictionary?

I have many dictionaries on my desk. They are all from Oxford from the earliest edition to the latest. I am fond of referring to it whenever I have a doubt on the meaning and the spelling.

So, my favouite is Webster pocket dictionary and digital dictionary webster pocket dictionary it's simple to explaining the meaning of a word and I easy to undesratnd because some of words ilustrated by a picture that represent the meaning. I do have a dictionary. There are a lot of dictionaries here at home. Many kinds too. I use my pocket Oxford dictionary, usually for meanings and spellings. I don't really use it anymore since I only go to Dictionary.com now to check those stuff out. It's easier to type it. :) We also have a Filipino-English dictionary, Spanish-English, and Chinese-English, and a pure Chinese dictionary. My brother and I used them for school. Now they're just stuck there... Hmm. I'm not really sure what my favorite dictionary is. Maybe it's the Spanish-English dictionary. I had loads of fun reading through it lol!

I have a dictionary at home. It is a Webster's dictionary. I also have a dictionary in my office at work. I do refer to them mainly for spelling but sometimes for definitions. I also keep a thesaurus in my office.

Yes, I have few dictionaries at my home. When I was in schools, I used to see them. But now, I am using MS Word Dictionary or online dictionaries. It is more comfortable. You just type your words in question and you'll get the answer. Using book dictionaries, you have to flip pages before finding your words in question.

Yes online and digital dictionaries are very convenient indeed. Still people keep their old printed dictionaries at their home. A dictionary either printed or digital is supposed to be an essentiality in a household. Thank you for the response.

Yes, in fact I have many and often refer to them. The Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (the definitive souse for the English Language)This is a two volume set, each book is about 1' by 3" by 9" (30cm x 7cm x 120cm) and comes in a box with a magnifying glass, since the print is too small to be read without. I was delighted to find this in a second hand book stall where every book was only £0.50 so they only charged me £1.00 for it; a great bargain! I also have philosophical dictionaries, legal dictionaries, medical dictionaries, English to Japanese dictionary and several other foreign language dictionaries. all the best urban

No wonder you have all those. I presumed you would. That was a great bargain indeed. Once in an International book exhibition here in our city I saw a great dictionary. Great in size. I think that is the one you bought at that old books stall. You should really be proud of possessing all those dictionaries. Thank you for the response, Sir.

Do you find the Chinese-English dictionary useful? I am an Indian and my mother tongue is Malayalam. I have one English-Malayalam dictionary, bhut seldom do I use it. I feel more comfortable with an English-English dictionary. Thank you lucy for your response.

Hello abroji. I have a few English dictionaries of different kinds, but my favorite one is Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary. I use it when I work in the office, but when I am at home, I usually check new words by using online dictionary, as it is much more convenient to look up the words in a few seconds.

I do have a very old hardcover dictionary in the house. However, it is covered in dust as my teens, hubby and I use dictionary.com when we need to use a dictionary. I haven't (and won't) discard the hardcover dictionary as there could always be a time we might need it. For us it is just so much easier to use the online dictionary, as the computer is always up and running!

Online dictionary is convenient and easy. So more and more people use them now a days. But don't allow the hardbound print dictionary to weather by dust. Just preserve it. Thank you for the response.

As a home school mom of two kids, we always have a dictionary in our house. We have a child's first dictionary that we haven't used in several years and we have our trusty Webster's dictionary that we use on a weekly if not daily basis. It is a must have in our home.

I have a dictionary right next to my computer. I like to check my spelling before I send. The dictionary I use is a New Concise Webster's Dictionary, I think I got it when I was in school 20 years ago. I can't spell all the good so a dictionary helps, And everyone in the house asks me how to spell things, so I got to have a dictionary.
