Do You Wear Your Seatbelt?

Canada

I do wear my seatbelt - it's automatic for me to put it on as soon as I get in a car. I do think it should be up to the individual as to whether or not to wear them but here in Canada, it's the law. Do you wear your seatbelt when driving/riding in a car/auto? Do you think people should? Why or why not?

Hi Hawaiiblue....welcome to MyLot!! I gather it's the law to wear your seatbelt. Good thing you know where the police "hide" so you won't get caught! ;)

Yes I wear seatbelts always, but it is my husband who reminds me always to wear seatbelts. He is the driver and Im the passenger coz I dont know how to drive much. Here in my country wearing seatbelts is a law also. Though sometimes many drivers dont follow the rules but its needed to wear for safety. The violator of this law of course receive punishment from the law/traffic enforcer when they caught the violator. The government just thinking the safetiness of the drivers thats why wearing seatbelts while driving is a law. Beside there are also many accident that wearing seatbelts saves the drivers life.

You're right about seatbelts saving lives. There's only been very few cases where seatbelts actually harmed an occupant of a vehicle during accidents. Thanks for sharing!

Not necessarily.. Only for the last few days I have been wearing the seat belts coz the cops are frisking every car and the ones without the seat belts on are penalised... I don't like wearing seat belts but now I do have to wear them... I know they are for my safety only, but I know how to drive safe and there is no need for me to have them on... But still I think people should have the seat belts on, coz u may be driving safely but not others, and its better to be safe than sorry... I think I am gonna change my habit soon...

It's very true what you say about other drivers. It doesn't matter how careful you are, there's bound to be someone out there that doesn't care about others safety, they just want to get where they're going. ps....love your avatar, hehe

Oh yeh, I wear my seatbelt every time now, because a few years ago I forgot and got fined on the spot for not doing so. I think it's a bit daft in the UK that it has to be worn in the towns, even when you are going slowly. When I drowe in Spain, a few years ago, I could take it off whenever I was in the town or city where there wasn't much speed. I don't know if that's still the same out there now, but to me it made a lot more sense. I grew up when there were no seat belts even fitted to cars and learned to drive that way, so now I always feel as if I'm needlessly strapped into my car.

I've never heard of such thing as to be able to unbuckle in cities or towns. I think that might make sense since you're not supposed to be going very fast. Perhaps such a law here would encourage people to drive slower in towns and cities as well..... ps....if there's any "British" word that I love more than "daft", I don't know what it is ;)

Putting on a seatbelt seems to be pretty automatic for most people these days. Used to be when I was a kid you didn't need to do it and when they started toughening the laws it was damn near impossible to get into the habit, but almost 30 years later and I have it down lol.

lol, excellent! You sound just like I was, took me a long time even though the law changed when I was just a "youngster" - it's very automatic now though. Thanks for sharing!

If there isn't a suitable seatbelt, I won't get in the car. My husband doesn't always wear his seatbelt, and I talk to him about it every time. Seatbelts are there for a reason. Everyone needs to wear a seatbelt.

As long as there is a seatbelt available, it is on. I always put it one, it's usually the first thing I do when I get into the car. I will go ahead and put it on before even starting the engine. I think people should, but I guess it's not that big of a deal if people choose not to. It's one of the those things, much like smoking. I don't think people should, but in the end it's your life and that is a decision that I don't mind people making for themselves.

I had the same opinion of you when I first posted this question here. Now though, after reading some of the responses, I'm starting to think that the law for seatbelts here in Canada IS a good thing. Thanks for sharing.

It's the law to wear them here too but people don't always wear them. I put my seatbelt on as soon as I get in the car. I always have to "remind" my hubby when he gets in the car though. I won't pull off without everyone in the car being buckled up. They have just recently made it a law here that even the people in the backseat have to be buckled up. It used to be that if you were over 12 years old (I think it was that age) that you didn't have to wear it but now they changed it so that everyone has to wear it.

I have a friend who, like you, won't pull off until everyone has their seatbelt on and he, too, "reminds" people to buckle up. I'm glad that it's pretty much automatic for me to put mine on. Thanks for sharing.

I always wear my belt. Its a good law here in Canada, and most other countries too. Everyone should wear their seat belt regardless. Even if you don't care about your life, you should wear it. Thats because if you require expensive hospitalization, due to a car crash, your fellow countrymen will be left to pay the healthcare costs. We are All One. There is no doubt, everyone should wear their seatbelt!

Wow, I hadn't thought of it that way! It's true - we are in this together, aren't we. Thanks for this little bit of enlightenment :)
