what is with garbagemen nowadays!?

United States

it is getting to the point where i have to call and have them send these guys back every week, they don't take all the cans, and i only put out what we're allowed. july is yard clippings month, meaning you can put anything out on the curb,as long as it's cut, bagged or placed in trash cans.the city does this so it's not all over the place. ..and today they blew right by it again, and i hear them saying how annoying it is,and heavy. our garbagemen look like WWE wrestlers, and little tiny me hauled the can to the curb, yet they can't lift it? these guys get $18 dollars an hour, full benefits, and 401k,and they don't want to do their job. where do i sign up?i'll take it. are your garbagemen this bad? only taking half? or do they do worse things?

Oh, if I heard mine talking like that. I would call and report them. They wouldn't have a job for long. As I live in a big city and jobs like that people grab up in a heart beat. I can honestly say my garbage men are pretty darn good. Every once in ahile they will knock glass on the ground and not clean it up. When they required to. But if I am out there. I will let them go and tell them I will clean it up.

I haven't had garbage men in years because we lived in an apartment complex but when we did,we always had trouble with them. sometimes they wouldn't take all the trash or they would just throuw the can down and it would roll away.If they don't want to do their jobs, they should find another job

That would be so irritating! I never had that problem when I had my house. When I married my husband I moved into his town house. They don't have cans, you sit out your bags. Which means you have to set them out late the evening before, or early the next morning. If you have to go out of town and set it out earlier than they like they ALWAYS leave a note. They complain about every little thing like boxes that may not be torn all the way down. Very very frustrating. Although I have to say I would hate them picking up only half the trash even more!

Wow, I really feel for you! We should find out where the garbage men live so we can drop the trash off at their houses when they don't pick it up! :)

boxes is another thing we go round and round about. they practically want them gift wrapped. i flatten them, cut them down if big,and twine them for them, and they still don't always take them.

Some days ours are really good but other days forget it. They will not dump the cans right so they can spill out and leave a mess on the roads. I agree at $18 an hour I know many who would scramble for that let alone addin the benefits and 401k and if I can pull the cans down there is no reason they can complain about the weight. What gets me though is how some are really loud. We'll hear them three blocks or more away yelling "Yo" to the driver to go to the next stop. That's a bit loud especially at 5am.

Well with the heat here they try to do as much as they can early and before the heat of the day. Not that I can blame them but you'd think they could do it without yelling.

LOL i guess it's the only way they can be heard over the compactor.they're probably so used to it,they do it whether it's on or not.

these guys yell too-but the good thing is the city moved pick up time til around 9 am minimum-because they were making so much noise people complained. they actually banned the metal cans for the same reason-everyone has plastic now.

I have to admit that our trash and recycling service is excellent. My only complaint would be how they throw the trash can back on the sidewalk. Sometimes they just leave it in the street. But other than that, I'm satisfied with their service. Our trash service is provided by the township I live in. We used to use Waste Management but that didn't work out. I'm lucky to live in a town that have great municiple services. Our streets are plowed immediately after it snows. They take up the grass clippings on a regular basis. And they are constantly replacing street signs and stops signs when they get faded. Lloyd

You have to realize that New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the United States, so we better get something for our money. Potholes are unheard of around here. Lloyd

You know... think about it though. Garbage men make good money and have great benefits and stuff...but they're messing with smelly trash all day. Ever driven behind a garbage truck? I wonder how those guys can do it! Not that that's an excuse in the least bit to slack on their jobs, but you know...some of it's gotta suck. Luckily since i live in a garage apartment, a perk is that I don't have to deal with it. My landlord/neighbors kid does it all. But I usually leave before he takes the cans back in. The worst thing I've really seen is that they throw the cans all over your driveway. Not to mention the cans I've had to dodge on the street so I don't crash into them and run them over.

i wouldn't doubt if some of the longest workers become desensitized to it..that's got to be how they ignore the smell LOL they must really hate the guy up the street from me..5 dogs.all newfoundlands..guess where the poop goes.. *faint*

Ha ha. When my parents first moved to the house they live in right now about 2 years ago the people who lived next door had dogs and NEVER cleaned up. So that summer, was probably the worst summer EVER. Now my brother lives there and man did the grass in their backyard get a lot of fertilizer, it grows so fast!

I would definitely complain, and maybe you should only pay for 1/2 the bill since they are only doing half the job. Are there others having the same problem? You should all get together and complain.

oh gee if i heard them saying that (since they get paid for it and it is their job) i would ring the council or the head office and report them. i live on a farm so i dont have garbagemen come to me, i have to take my garbage to the tip which is about 7 ks away. atleast that way i know my garbage is left there, but its a pain havign to go there especially since i only have a car not a ute. i have had to get my brother inlaw with his ute and put rubbish in 2 drums and get him to take them, which isnt very often

Thankfully ours are really cool; they will take anything as long as they have room on the truck. If there is something that they can't take they will call someone to come get it. One of them will leave a note saying that another truck will be back to get whatever they couldn't take. The best part is there are people that drive around the night before trash pick up and grab stuff they can make a couple dollars on at the junk yard. That saves space at the dump and hey, if they make a couple bucks doing it, even better.

they left a note?ok,now that is cool. i wish ours were like that. heh..i admit i sidewalk surf sometimes..but not to sell..i use it.you'd be amazed at some of the things people throw out almost brand new here. probably a lot of it's people moving and limited room in the truck.

Definately call the main office. If nothing else, ask why your garbage was left there. If there was nothing wrong with it, guess what? Those lazy city workers will have to come back to get it. Guess they had done a real big favor for themselves, wouldn't they? LOL! I did this once. The GM didn't take anything that I had put out to recylce. I called the office, and was told that they don't take cereal boxes, cake mix boxes, or basically anything with a shiney surface. I asked about the tin cans and milk jugs. Yes, they do take those. I re-sorted it, and put it back to the curb, and sure enough, the GM came and got the recycling. They sure made a pain in the backside that day. (Even though, yes, it was partially my fault!)

With the money garbagemen make, I'm with you...lets both get jobs as garbageladies...LOL...They pretty much pick up the garbage around me, but can they ever make a mess of it...sometimes the bags will burst open, and garbage is then all over the streets here, and I think it should be THEIR job to pick it up, don't you So your garbagemen look like sumo wrestlers or WWE wrestlers and they complained your garbage was too heavy..that's a riot

isn't it? a can full of grass doesn't weigh that much..the cat litter can probably weighs more.

Luckily, I live in an apartment building, so as long as we get our garbage to the dumpster, they will take it away. We also have two large recycling dumpsters, though they do get filled up pretty quickly. The only difficulty we have is that with 10 apartments in the building, we've had to take our time getting rid of cardboard boxes, so as to not fill up the entire recycling dumpster in one day.

i miss that about apartments-anything i could put in the dumpster, they took.i'd seen guys from other apartments get in the dumpster and stomp it down,so they could put in more LOL

I am so glad that I don't have your garbagemen. Here if you can fit it into the dumpster, they will take it. And we have no trouble with the recycling either. Of course, it is all automatic--the truck does the lifting. The recycling truck crew does get snotty if your bin is not in the exact right spot. As for my grass clippings, I have a compost pile. As I said, I am glad that I have a different trash crew. I hated having to call the grease pickup people at my last job. They were supposed to pick it up every couple of weeks, and it would be overflowing before they showed up. It was one of the unpleasant jobs in food service--cleaning up after the grease people. Rotting grease stinks to high heaven. Hope they can a new attitude soon; you shouldn't have to put up with this.

i have a compost pile too-and believe it or not,it's chock full LOL that's why i put some of it out,to give the pile time to settle a little bit so i could add more. i wish we had dumpster service.. oh man..i know exactly what you're talking about. i worked at a place with a bank of those 55 gallon grease drums..it seems it got everywhere but the drum.when they got full, this one guy dumped it down the outside drain..what a stinky clogged mess that made..

I have not had a problem with mine. If they acted as you are describing, I would call and report them. You are paying for this service if not directly than thru your taxes. They are well paid and should be doing their job. I say...report them.

Well in the "old days", we used to have great Refuse Collectors, - that's what we call them here - and they regularly came on time once a week and took everything. If you had anything appreciably bigger or heavier than the normal load, you just had to phone up the Council, and they would arrange for them to come back at a specific time to pick it up. However, recently all that has changed. We only have general rubbish collectios once a fortnight now, which eans that rubbish does tend to pile up - especially outside restaurants and Hotels etc., and it does smell in the hot weather. On the alternate weeks they will now only collect recyclable waste or garden waste - which all has to be put in separate, colour-coded bins, and if you get one thing wrong they won't take any of it. So you are not alone having problems.

that's pretty much what they've done to us..cut it down to one day.but these guys don't even get off the truck to see if it's wrong or not.if they don't feel like picking it up,they drive on by.

you think that only the garbagemens are going mad? people all around the globe are crazier day by day... and a $18 it's not a motivating wage... well may be in Romania would be... coz here people would do almost anything for 18 dollars an hour... and yes, that shows how desperate and mad are people now a days;)... and the garbagemens are not even in topten of most mad people/job...;)
