My friend asked me yesterday why the dogs wag their tails - I had no answer, I just said it was their way of greeting, but they do it otherwise also to ask for something etc. So why and when does your dog wags it's tail?

Well, wolves wag their tails. This must have evolved to signal something to other wolves, friendly non-aggressiveness presumably, just as curling the lips back can be a sign of aggression. Dogs use there natural signalling methods with us. The dog that leaps up at you is not welcoming you but asking you to regurgitate some food for her. all the best urban
