I have a broadband connection, of 256 kbps, but oflate, it never gives 256kbps capacity, it only dwells around, 60kbps to 170kbps. Does this have any link with the antivirus software i have.(I've in my system Trend PC cillin antivirus and anti spyware.) So it consumes a lot of time between discussions.

Its perfectly ok. The speed ur getting is depend on the traffic of the boradband connection. My line speed is 512kbps and when i check my line speed it came 380 to 430 kbps. We will never get true internet speed as per our line connection. So its not your line fault or your ISP fault. But you can do one thing in order to increase internet speed and that thing is that please increase your RAM. The higher the RAM, the better the speed.

Dear saivenkaat802003 Which service provider you are using ?? I am using Airtel Broadband Connection and very happy with their service .. It's always on and I never have speed kind of problems .. I can give you a suggestion about increasing your internet speed -- you can download a software -- Opera .. from www.downolad.com or any other site from where you can get if for free .. After that log on to www.mylot.com or any other site .. using Opera .. and not Internet Explorer .. Opera increases your net speed as well. Regarding your antivirus software issue .. sorry but I have no answer ..

It depends upon the Service provider, if your service provider is providing dedicated broadband connection then you must get around 230kbps speed you wont be getting full speed as it shows, if your service provider is not providing dedicated connection the you will be getting lessthan 180kbps and its common type of connection mostly found. and yours is that case. there is no problem with your computer but its solely of your service provider they say it as 256 but gives you only lessthan 180 max.

You got to www.speedtest.net and test again your upload and download speed. After that, after you determined your download and upload speed, from there, you will know if you having a 256 dsl line. For me i am having a 5 mb adsl line, so when i tested my speed, i have download speed of 5540 upload of 480 so it correct. Antivirus and Spyware software do not affect your internet speed.

Sometimes internet connection is slow because you might have too many programs running on your computer at the same time and it is eating all your ram up causing the computer to slow and also the internet connection, have you tried stopping some of your background processes and close any programs which you are not using?

This is what your provider never told you. You see.. your 256 kbps is actually 256 kilobit per second and not kilobyte per second. There's a really big difference between the two. To calculate how much kilobyte you really get is to divide it by 8.. So 256/8 = roughly 20 - 30 kbps.. The 256 kbps is the max limit of which you will get. These limit were never reached. This is because the speed is decreased because all the speed is shared between you and your neighbours. In some cases, your country.. That might explain if u receive slower internet on peak hours than on non-peak hours
