"Golden Oldies" - do you still listen to them?

I guess this discussion is mainly aimed at "older" myLotians but younger ones feel free to respond if you want (even if you've never heard of some of the music I'm talking about lol!) Most of us have a few classic albums in our collection like "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac, "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, "Sgt Pepper" the Beatles ... you get the idea. Do you have a favourite that you still listen to frequently even though it's maybe 30 years old now? Personally I'm a huge Stones fan so I listen to a lot of their old stuff (and still on vinyl as well!) but apart from them the "golden oldies" I still play a lot are Rod Stewart "Every Picture Tells A Story" and Bad Company "Straight Shooter"

Quite often, I end up listening to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest (I think they're all from your area of the world.), Led Zep, Heart, to name a few. I also listen to a lot of R&B stuff from the 1950's 1960's & even 1970's from Motown Records, Stax Records, & quite a few that were influenced by them. When covered the right way, a lot of album guts that are not really heard much or at all nowadays on oldies formats, make great heavy metal cuts. One that comes to mind is The Temptations' You're My Everything ... it has this Scorpions' No One Like You feel to it. Nowadays, music from the 1980's is now considered oldies. I'm actually listening to Rainbow In THe Dark right now as I type this. I also have most of the albums released by The Scorpions from their 1970's stuff to Unbreakable. There is a lot of good stuff there. It seems that most of the music from the 1990's thru today goes from lacking to just utter junk. You can find a few good treasures there, but they're very few & far in between.

Yes those bands are all British. I love Motown too - it never sounds "dated". The 70's and 80's were really the peak of heavy metal I think although I have to admit I'm totally out of touch with more recent stuff in that genre. I started to regress sometime during the 90's when I realised that nothing I heard on the radio even came close to being as good as what had gone before. It could of course just be my age (which is a horrible thought!!) but it's very rare for me to hear a new band or artist nowadays that inspires me in any way.

It seeed that a lot of the Motown music started losing popularity in the USA & gained popularity in Great Britain. That was probably why quite a few of the artists ended up relocating to Great Britain. You also hit another thing. Edwin Starr's "War" was originally a 1970 classic protesting the American involvement in the Vietnam War. I am sure for quite a few American & British, it applies to the Iraq situation. I agree with you. It seems that the stuff spat out by the record companies these days, most of it is not even worth the media it's on. There is some good stuff out there, but most of it is released by DIY Do It Yourself) who have nothing to do with the major labels. Another name for this is Indie music (because it was done independently with no big-time record company executive trying to change the music made by artists in such a way that it gets turned from good stuff to plain old junk.

When I hear "Golden Oldies" I think more of the 50's and 60's than the music you've listed. But I do listen to the bands you listed, as well as the 50's and 60's music. I also listen to 40's music. I like stuff like the Supremes and duwop music as well.

That's interesting because I think of the 50's as being "Golden Oldies" - not the 70's or 80's but I thought that was just my age and the fact that I was in denial lol! I notice you're a lot younger than me though so maybe it's not that after all!

Hey I loved the Rollers as well!! I still have the half-mast jeans with tartan down the legs that I wore when I was 13 - although even if I was ever tempted to wear them again I don't think I could even fit one leg in them now LOL.

I'm an golden oldies fan of music, especially R&B and pop music from Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Jackson 5, The Eagles, Abba, Bee Gees, Earth Wind and Fire, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie and the list goes on.

I'm a classic rock freak, 70's and 80's mostly but I can go back to the 50's and 60's hit songs and still remember all the words! LOL The band I'm in does mostly 70's and 80's classics but we do some new stuff too. I like a lot of the newer hard rock stuff, Nickelback, Disturbed, Godsmack are some of my favorites. But sometimes I just have to get out my old Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Molly Hatchet, Poison, Whitesnake, Metallica, etc...

Oh you can't beat a bit of Led Zeppelin! I don't mind some of the newer stuff but I admit I'm pretty out of touch with what's going on in that area. I'm a bit stuck in the past lol!

I still do listen to most of them, with some from our very own filipino brand of music!;) As for worldly known artist's: I listen to Air Supply mostly from their top rated albums, like their "Greatest Hits album," "The Very Best of Air Supply," and "All Out of Love.. Live!" From Bread, I listen to most of their albums that was very popular during their time. I could still name some more, but I prefer to give way to others for them to get a chance to add a few..=)

I've never really listened to Air Supply much although I know a couple of their songs but I'm very familiar with Bread because I have their greatest hits album! You just go ahead and name as many as you want - I don't mind :)

Oh yes I do; I love Motown and I listen to it from time to time when I want to hear something good and upbeat.as well as music from the 60s to now. Sometimes I go back even further depending on what I'm feeling on myself; I guess I am at the age where I can listen to a certain song and remember what I was doing at the particular time. Interesting.

Dear Landlord, Bird On The Wire, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, Hitchcock Railway, That's Your Business Now, Something, Delta Lady, Hello Little Friend, Darling Be Home Soon
I like to listen to Joe Cocker, Joe Cocker Album. When I visit my Mom. She has the album and a record player. I like to hear it on vinyl, it sounds better. CD just doesn't do it for me. I have alot of albums of the era but no turntable, sure do miss hearing them. I have 8-tracks too, now that's a totally different experience. Peace, Totty

Vinyl really just gives a totally different sound I think. Maybe it's just me being nostalgic because vinyl was all you could get when I was a teenager but I definitely think it sounds better - even with the scratches etc!

I listen to music that spans 4 decades, from the 70s till recent times. Mostly, these are hit songs that make the charts and were popular during their time. Some are golden oldies and many are evergreens. They are really very listenable and one can never forget them even years later, unlike some of today's songs which will be here today and gone tomorrow. Even some of the artistes today won't be around for long.

I think what you say about todays songs and artists is very true. I don't imagine many (if any) of them will be remembered in 30 or 40 years time.

I'm a big 80's fan but I do love some of the older stuff. I was born in 1969 so really missed out on the 60's stuff but still appreciate alot of the music back then. Not really into Elvis but I do love some of the 60's stuff!

One of my earliest "musical" memories was seeing Elvis on tv in I think '68 or '69. I remember thinking he was pretty cool but my parents liked him so that meant I couldn't possibly admit to liking him too! Even though I was only about 8 or 9 at the time the rebellion was starting to kick in! I freely admit to liking Elvis now although I don't often listen to his music.

You betcha! I love most anything from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The 'music' of today just doesn't do it for me. I hear very little instrumentation and the 'vocals' are basiclly either someone talking or screaming! Some of my favorite oldies are The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Police, Billy Joel, Chicago and more! I've dated myself I know, but that is okay with me!

I don't mind some of the music around today but I think there's just so little variety - or at least it seems that way to me anyway. I listen to Police quite a lot too - I used to love them.

Oh I am definately a "golden oldie", and I still listem to the songs of my teenage years (1970's) all the time. I still listen to "Rumours" a lot too, and "Dark Side ofthe Moon". My own special favourite is "Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis. I revised for my O'Levels to the strains of Peter Gabriel singing those immortal starting words, "Can you tell me were my couhtry lies", and I still sing it now, - though only in private as I never could sing. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. Oh - and as for Rod Stewart....... I saw him at the Diana concert a few weeks ago, and his live version of "Maggie May" was still better than all the younger srtists could ever perform in my opinion!!
@Stiletto (4579)
15 Jul 07
I realised when I was typing this discussion that I hadn't listened to "Rumours" for years so I'm playing it right now! It still sounds good. You know I was never a huge Rod Stewart fan - I think "Every Picture Tells A Story" is the only one of his albums I've ever owned - but I think he's one of those rare artists that getting older really suits! I agree with you - no-one can sing "Maggie May" like Rod Stewart.

I'm a younger person and I listen to all of those bands. I love them, especially the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. My dad brought me up listening to all that music, and I've never gotten away from it. It's better than most of the music that my generation has made.

I couldn't agree more. I still feel the best music was created from the late 60's, through the 70's to the early 80's. That is why a lot of hits nowadays are remakes of music from the 70's. In those days the words still made sense and the artists really made the music. Today most "music" are completely electronic or you can't make out a word the artist is saying. I am so glad that there are more people who keep the good music alive.

Oh and some of the remakes just make me want to scream! They take a perfectly good song and turn it into some lame electronic dance thing. I'm trying to think of examples but at the moment they're not coming to me but I'm sure you know what I mean.
