I think I keep a fairly balanced diet but I have put on a few pounds over the years. I am trying to come up with a healthier diet plan. I don't want "to go on a diet" I want to start eating healthier. I'm interested to know what you would consider a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

When I'm opting for something a little healthier, for breakfast I do whole grain cereal and fruit, oatmeal and fruit or a poached egg on whole grain bread with lean breakfast meat (turkey bacon, for example). Of course it also depends on what you're watching. Is it fat, calories, sodium, etc? That makes a difference in what a person eats when they want to eat healthy. Lunch would be a sandwich on whole grain bread, with lettuce, tomato, alfalfa sprouts, cucumber slices, a little avocado, a slice of cheese and a couple of slices of lunch meat. Or a good big salad. Dinner... there are so many options. One of my favorites is a nice whole grain pasta with tomato sauce loaded wth fresh vegetables. And a small salad on the side. For protein I poach an egg in the tomato sauce.

That sounds good and yummy too. Especially the sandwich. I'd leave out the alfalfa sprouts though, I think.

Those do sound yummy - maybe I should try that as well. Haven't tried wholegrain pasta though, I love pastas.

Wholegrain pasta has a nice kind of nutty flavor to it.

The folks above made some pretty good suggestions for healthier foods, so this is what I have to add to these suggestions: Each meal through the day should get a bit smaller, breakfast is big (but not too fatty, avoid breakfast meats, mostly), lunch is medium-sized, and dinner is small and light. Don't forget some little snacks throughout the day to keep blood sugar level. If you want a sweet snack, hold out for the very best example of that snack; ie, if you want chocolate, don't settle for Hershey's, wait until you can get some Godiva. The craving may pass before you can get the high-quality type of snack to satisfy it. Even if it doesn't, the good stuff is rich, so you can be satisfied with a small amount. I don't think you can have too much fruit, unless maybe you ate a whole watermelon or something. Even though there's sugar, it is not refined sugar, so it doesn't cause the blood sugar spikes and drops that refined sugar does. The five servings a day of fruits and veggies is a minimum, it won't hurt your body if you get more than 5. The other thing I have to offer is, get a bicycle. I have bad knees, so it got too hard to fitness walk. I dusted off my trusty bike, and was able to keep on getting exercise with it. I gotta believe Miami has some pretty awesome places to ride! A friend is trying a different approach. Her plan is, warm her muscles, do enough exercise to raise her heart rate, then do chores. When her body settles back to normal heart rate/breathing, she does a little more exercise to raise the rate, then back to chores, etc. Her theory is, she wants to maximize the calories she's burning with housework, gardening, etc, so that's why the intervals of exercise. She's been doing it for 3 weeks, so we don't know if this works yet or not.

I would say fruit for breakfast, a turkey or veggie sandwich for lunch, and grilled chicken with steamed rice and veggies for dinner is a typical healthful diet menu.

Oh those pounds do add up. I try to eat smaller portions of what ever I eat. I try to stay away from eating a slice of bread with meals like some people do. I try to eat something like a wholegrain cereal and 2%milk in the morning. Maybe a sandwich of wholegrain bread with meat or peanutbutter for lunch, fruit like apples during the day. Supper would be the biggest meal. I try not to have much thick gravy with meat or mashed potatoes. I try to have a salad too. I'm afraid I will have to exercise more cause I have recently put on some extra pounds.

This isn't the answer to your question, but doing whatever you can to replace your sodas with water-drink lots of water. Lack of water could actually cause fatique, headaches, and joints problem. So drink it up my friend. :)

This is my diet, whcih I think is healthy enough. Breakfast - porridge or kedjeree or toast and marmalade or kippers. At miday - rolls with butter and cheese or tuna and salad. Evening meal - mashed potatoes, sweatheart cabbage, vegetable dish or fish, potatoes and peas or vegetable dish and salad or fish and salad or vegetable stew or pasta and suace or pasta bake or slices of potatoe and onion or leek baked in a sauce. Grapefruit or fruit salad or some pudding. Additionally, I eat liberally apples and other fruit, celery, tomatoes and cakes and imbibe tea and water libeally Of course, if you are sedentary then no diet will really be healthy but you should eat one that has a lower carbohydrate content than mine and since you will need to eat less food, some vitimen rich foods. all the best urban

Hello miami. My breakfast always consisted of a cup of steaming brewed coffee, a hot congee and about 2 glasses of water. I prefer soft rather than hard food to perk me up in the morning. Lunch is always my heaviest meal of the day. Dinner will be between light to moderate but never heavy. I recently started to eat healthy. I make sure there's veggies and fruits on the table. Fish especially salmon is my top favorite. I only allowed meat 2 or 3 times a week. Although I do not have any weight issues, but I notice that I have more energy now since I implemented breakfast as part of my meal. I think the best way to shed a few pounds is to reduce carbohydrate and introduce more proteins in your diet.

It might be good to know your own metabolic rate. The balanced diet pyramid is the best to follow for a common being. For some, it could be 5 or 7 small meals a day. Whatever the case, one needs to have more fruits and vegetables and less of fats and empty calories. 3 meals is okay, 5 meals is encouraged and skip meals is discouraged. Wish you success in keeping a healthy and balanced diet.

I have either grapefruit or melon for breakfast....I read somewhere that cantaloupe is very healthy, which is great since I love it...I also have fruit for lunch with either some yogurt or cottage cheese. For dinner I eat whatever I want, but it will usually be a meat potato or rice and vegetable, heavy on the veggies cause I like those. Eating earlier in the evening sometimes helps because you have a chance to burn off the calories before bed. Late night snacking is not good it will make you put on weight.

Thank you. One of my problems is definately that we eat too late. We have to work our meals around the kids practices or games. That makes it a bit challenging.

Hi!Suppressing your desires or deprieving yourself of MOUTH-WATERING FOOD would only lead to further issues or even frustration.Havea balanced diet the whole day comprising of Fruits [before food], proteins,Greens, iron, calcium & minerals weighing 1000-1200calories per day for a woman/1500-1800cal per day for a male.If you happen to break the rule, compensate by burning the extra calories with an extra work-out in the GYM or a SWIM etc.A MORNING WALK & PRANAYAM is a MUST which would do you a world of Good!! I think in breakfast we should have juice, fruits and bread. Breakfast should be light . In lunch we can eat anything we want and in dinner we should eat something which is easy to digest.

As we are all aware, miamilady, a healthy diet consists of eating foods from the basic food groups; eating less sugar and fats; and cutting down on red meats. To me a good meal requires a serving of lean meat, a fruit, avegetable or two, and bread if you shoose to have it. I tend to like some foods that don't necessarily like me back such as eggs and cheese so I try to limit my intake of these foods.

I wouldn't say how I eat is healthy. Just that changing how much I eat and how often I eat helped me lose around 80 pounds in 6 months. I'm a backwards diabetic so I can't eat breakfast, or my blood sugar will drop drastically. But, I normally have lunch and dinner, but use smaller plates than everyone else and get smaller portions. between meals, I eat fresh fruit, carrots, and celery. I stay completely away from milk, because it's high in fat and colesterol. Everyone loses weight at their own pace. I don't like to excercise, but I dance alot when I'm cleaning and have the stereo on. I also bought an ablounge which the kids and I love to use all the time. My kids fight over who gets to use it. It's something easy and simple and doesn't feel like you are working out. Hope this helps some.

Breakfast... I think a good breakfast should contain some base nutrients for the day, any fruit is good, and the sugars breakdown fast enough to give you a wake up. A glass of milk can also keep your calcium levels up if you drink it long-term like this. In the long run, it benefits greatly, women in particular, as calcium seepage seems to occur in the later years. Lunch, a sandwich can cover multiple food groups, and be tasty at the same time. Juice or water can also be added for better health. Salads are a good alternative, as they provide nutrients whilst keeping a low calorie count. Dinner, almost anything goes, but most protein should be taken in during dinner, a meat is recommended, unless one is vegetarian. A side of any vegetable is good as well. Food guides are hard to follow though... Am I the only one who think some of the numbers are ridiculously high? I don't even eat enough to fulfill the recommended servings...

I'm very big on eating fruits and vegetables all day. Normally I can get breakfast, but if I do, since it's the most important meal of the day, I try to eat some egg whites and some whole wheat toast with a bowl of fruit. Then lunch, I usually eat a sandwich, mostly a turkey and cheese one with lots of veggies, I usually go to subway to get it because it's easier for me to stop and get something for lunch since I only get half an hour, but I take yogurt with me, I prefer yoplait yogurt. Then for dinner, I usually have a nice big salad with at least 10 different veggies in it, with chicken or something like that, then we might have another veggie like corn or green beans. Like I said, very big on the fruits and veggies.
