I was taking my crew out for a bike ride this morning when our local police officer stopped us. He quickly ran out of his car and asked us to wait. Then he proceeded to hand each of my kids a ticket. What was the ticket for??? FREE ICE CREAM!!! The local businesses are trying to get kids to wear their helmets, so if get caught wearing their helmet they get a free ice cream, candy bar, soda, whatever! So, who cares about safety??? Wear the helmet to get the free ice cream!!! LOL!

I ride ever so often now days in my old age. And I've never wore a helmet and don't think I will. I stay off roads for the most part. Now my grandsons wear helmets all the time. If I wear a helmet and ride out to your area will I get a free ice cream cone also? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I'll vouch for you, Bob! I'm sure the city cops wouldn't mind sharing a couple extra coupons for grown-ups. :) I'll have to admit, I never wore a helmet either growing up. I leaned to ride on a gravel road, very little traffic, and if I fell, well, I just learned not to do it again. The only time I thought I'd really need it was when I rode my bike straight into my dad's raspberry patch. Oooh... that hurt! :)

This is so funny, but hey if it will get kids to wear their helmets I am all for it. I wish more cities would do this. I think that kids should wear them more since they are more carefree than I was when I was that age. Kids don't watch where they are going and I have even had them ride out in front of me on a green light. They have no respect for traffic laws.

That's awesome and I bet it works too. I think it is a wonderful idea and good for both the police and the local sponsors. Nothing like giving away free stuff to get attention...:}

You are so right! Our local library has a summer reading program going on as well. For every 5 books the kids read, they get a small prize--Ice cream cone, small fry from McDonald's, and a free movie pass! My kids have been hitting those books hard all summer!

That is a really great incentive to get kids to wear helmets. alot of towns could learn from this.

I agree! There are so many children that don't wear their helmets here in town. I'm glad that mine aren't afraid to wear theirs. My 3 year old even wears hers when she's on her tricycle!

My kids are used to putting on their helmets. Its just something we always did. Like putting on shoes to go outside, you just don't bike, skateboard or rollerblade without it on. I think that is great incentive for those who haven't done so to start now. This past May my daughter's friend (14) lost his life when he was skateboarding on the road without a helmet. It is so important to wear them. Vicki

I'm glad that it's just natural for your kids to do. It is so sad when bad thing happen that could have been avoided. I'm sorry about your daughter's friend. It makes me anxious when I see kids w/out them, and doing stunts and dangerous things. Worse yet, our street has a lot of traffic on it. That really gets my goat!
