What do you do when you can't fall asleep?

Just wondering what advice can you give me to fall asleep fast. Since I've worked as a call center 2 years ago, there comes a time where I really can't fall asleep no matter what I do. Like right now, it's already 12:10 am and even though I turned up some instrumental music I still can't sleep. I've tried melatonin-t before and it's effective but I wouldn't want to always take something before I go to sleep. Did you have the same problem before?

I usually turn on the television set it up on a timer and before the timer goes of i am already asleep... i think a walk before sleep would help also (if you can get some fresh air) You mustn't eat before you go to sleep because food provides energy to your body so it will be hard to fall asleep with a full stomach

Thank you so much for the advice, the reason why I'm in front of the computer right now is because I'm trying to exhaust my eyes to feel sleep. It's been an hour and a half but still no effect. I did eat at about 8pm and had a little walk with the dog but still I can't get to sleep. Anyway, thenks again for the reply!

I would either play video games or try to sleep with my eyes open. Lucky for me I don't suffer from Insomnia.

Rather than toss and turn and get worked up over not sleeping, I do something! I turn on my beside table light and get out my book of sudoku puzzles or the book that I am currently reading. I read or do sudokus until my eyes are heavy. The sudoku works best for me becasue with a book, I will then often stay up too late trying to see what happens next in the book! Crossword puzzle books work great too. I find that it is just enough to get both my mind and eyes tired!

i do have such problems every now and then. i worked in a hospital for 2 years before wherein we work on shifts. and most of the time, i get to be in teh 10pm to 6am shift. i really hate it. trying to get to sleep but i just can't. what i do is watch some films. usually, films after 12 midnight make my eyes so tired. it works for me. i can go to sleep quick without finishing a certain film. do you take in coffee in a day? if so, try not taking coffee for the whole day. you might fall asleep earlier at night. anne

Sleep is like a thief! When you expect it so badly to get hold you, it doesnt show up, but just keep yourself in bed, it will surely show up unless it is an extreme sleeping disorder. Usually I suffer the same, but use the sturbon delay of sleep to show up productively, i map out what I should be doing the next day, I set into deep useful thoughts for me and my family and find time to weigh available options for an action plan in mind-I even take notes of striking ideas that come at such hours-in this way sleeplessness becomes an important bonus!

i have the same problem before since i ussually sleep late when i was still studying because of late nights of reviewing my lessons, doing homework, research and a lot more. my mother told me to drink milk but it has no effect on me. so i opt to drink coffe, weird but it works on me, it has a reverse effect on my body. :) though im not advising you to try it too.

Hello! The time when you would like to go to sleep at night daily, just go to bed that time. Maximum, first one week you would not able to sleep at that time, but slowly your body would get adjusted to the time & you'll get sleep. You can also try reading some boring books before going to bed or do something which is really boring to you because this would make you sleepy & then you can go to bed...vani^_^

Hi,msvenzon! I have met this problem, especially in the period of the final examination :P Usually,if I cannot fall asleep,I will choose listening to music.Music makes me calm down, at least I can feel peaceful when I listen to music.

The best thing I have ever used when I can't fall asleep is Tylenol PM. The only problem I have ever had is it is harder to get going in the am.

sometimes I read a good book. A glass of warm milk helps too. there are times that I have to change my beddings just so I can feel comfortable and fall asleep faster. When I really cant fall asleep I clean my room so as to make my self tired and at the same time comfortable with the environment. I sometimes dance for minute or two helps you sleep much better..

I hear its best to just lay there and for 20 mint you cant sleep then get up. Dont put on too much light. Do something in the dark or little light. Maybe read or something light. Nothing huge. I've heard warm milk helps. Write in a journal if you cant sleep cause your mind is awake, as mine does sometimes. So yeah good luck. Sometimes you cant do a thing and just give in and be tired next day. It sucks but sometimes it happens :/

It is rare for me not to be able to fall asleep, but I tend to wake up very early in the morning after about 5 hours sleep.. I will meditate then on my breathing.. Holding my concentration on the inhalation and exhalation as it enters and leaves my body and block out all other thoughts. (This is zazen, or Zen meditation). If I do it whilst lying in bed, I will often fall back to sleep without thinking of it. But if I am awake, I get up and meditate in this way in my home office. As a therapist, I teach others this technique if they complain to me that they have insomnia. It will always work providing they are not *trying* to get to sleep - Trying to get to sleep usually keeps people awake! :-)

One thing that can help you sleep fast is reading books, listening to your kind of music or drinking cammomile tea before sleeping.

Hi,I think it's really an awful problem.I had the same problem before.Sometimes I lay down on the bed for hours and couldn't fall asleep at all. What I can only do was just toss and turn in bed.It made me very tired.I advise that you drink a glass of milk just before going to bed every night.I think it's a good way to solve this problem.Hope it works for you!
