Ways of getting your five a day

July 25, 2007 3:00am CST
It's so difficult to get your five portions of fruit and veg per day. There is only so many pieces of fruit I can eat, and portions of veg with my dinner. I am constantly trying to find new inventive ways of getting fruit and veg into my diet as well as my children's, whom I find it even more difficult to force in those sneaky pieces of fruit and veg. I try to puree up veg and add it to the cooking sauce etc, but getting them to drink smoothies isn't easy and they argie after having one piece of fruit a day and would rather go without eating rubbish if it means they don't have to eat fruit either. Any ideas?

I reach for a piece of fruit or a vegetable every time I want a snack. As hard as it is to eat an apple when I want a candybar it helps get my fruits and veggies in and keep pounds off. I add frozen veggies to casseroles and pre-made meals like Tuna Helper. Cut up fruits in cereal. I don't know how to get kids to eat more because my daughter can't get enough (I know, lucky me).

Its very easy if you have fruit juice with breakfast, a fruit scroll (dried fruit strips) or a banana as a snack mid morning, salad with lunch, two green veg with dinner and a fruit juice or piece of fruit mid evening, that makes at least 6 portions without even thinking about it. If you have stir fry or something you will eat loads more by teh time you put everything into it.

Good point about the stir fry, I have started cooking these lately and I bung in any left over veg I can find etc.

I wish I could help, but I know that I don't even come close. I'm probably lucky to get 5 a week! I think that the V8 Splash drinks are supposed to contain several servings each, though. I'm also hooked on the Naked juice brand, which has 3-5 servings per bottle, and is yummy!

Various juices have more than 1 serving of fruits/veg in 1 serving of juice. I think juicy juice has some that are fruit and veg. Using cut up veggies in different dishes can also boost help -- meatloaf, for example.

Hi You can add fruit to cereals and oatmeals, panckaes and muffins etc Also another great way is by making fruit and veggie smoothies. even if you add a lil ice cream and make a banana shake or a starwberry shake using fresh fruits. Also people forget about pie!! its a way to get fruits in too.. Veggies i usually cook a leafy veggie and a regular veggie with every meal Salad also make lil snack size ziploc bags with carrot sticks celery grapes berries cucumber slices etc they are quick and easy to grab for a snack.
