Be Honest...If You Were Rich, Would You Use The Money For Yourself Or...

I'm just curious...if you were rich, and I mean you had more money than you could ever spend in your lifetime, would you use that money to benefit just your friends and family? Or would you use that money to help others that needed help? Personally, I would want to set up a fund for people that really needed the help. I'm not talking about the ones who qualify for all the government freebies; I mean the people who are working class citizens with a family to support, who fall through the cracks because they make just a teensy bit too much to qualify for help from the government. People who have jobs, and are genuinely trying to better their situations, but are living paycheck to paycheck and just scraping by. So, would you choose to help others or just to help yourself?

Being on the non-receiving end of family who has money and lots of it, yes, I would help all my family, but also agree with you that I would help others. I would donate to my church first and probably most because they have helped me and my family when times were tough for us so I know that the money would go to help families who are living paycheck to paycheck, just like we were. And I don't feel I have to be rich to give. I live on a modest income now, but I still give to those who need help once in a while. I have been blesses, so it is right to share that blessing by helping others.

Good point, it's nice to be able to help others even if you aren't rich. It doesn't even have to be monetary, it can be by helping them with childcare or errands or yard work.

Yes, I would, not only help all the people that I could, but also , all the animals that I could. My big dream would be to start up as many facilities to take care of strays, as I possibly could. I would also, donate to lots of charities, and give, give, give, to all in need.

I like your idea of taking care of animals too. Starting up a no-kill animal shelter and animal sanctuary would be very appealing to me as well.

A free spay/neuter program would be wonderful. And throwing a kitten out into the street?! I hope that person gets caught. Cruelty to animals shouldn't be tolerated.

No, it shouldn't. The people should have to go through the same torture that the animals they killed went through. Turnabout's fair play.

I would do both. Family, friends, and others needing help. I have to say you have a wonderful time. It is so sad to see people who work their butt off and still can't quite make it. Yet they can't get any help because the people who sit on their bums all day are getting it.

I would like to think that I would help other people, but that would not happen. All of the money would be spent on cars, planes, houses, more cars, etc.

First, I would take care of my family, basically paying every bill that we owe off. Then I would pay any bills that my parents and my sister has. Then I would work on my husband's family, making sure that all there debts are paid for. Then I would give a huge amount to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Then set up my kid's college fund, along with my nieces and nephews. I would also donate to the war vets. Then go from there. I also like your idea, because people like my family that make to much for help, but to little to basically survive, it really stinks. Especially for the ones like us that's in the military, but are told I'm sorry but you chose that job.

Oh I know. My sister and her family gets help. She works her butt off, while her pos husband basically does nothing. He had a nice job, an ok home, then up and quit for no reason. Then they lost there home, luckily my parents had another home for them to live in. I have a few other's in my family that are the bad apples. I think there should be more help for families that are working there butts off and trying.

I just think it's sad that the government will bend over backwards to help people who refuse to help themselves. I realize that not everyone who accepts government freebies is like that, but there are a few bad apples right?

My response starts with a true fact about my high school. When i passed out of high school, and had to apply for engineering, i knew i had not much good of marks. But there were some of my friends, a son of a low earning clerk, another of a bus conductor, who scored brilliant marks. But when i asked them about their aspirations, they told that it might not be possible to pursue high dreams because of the high amount of fees to be paid. And there were other younger siblings to be taken care of. I was awestruck, just because they seemed to be help less. Now my reply goes. I have finished my graduation and soon about to resume for a job. I had vowed then that my first salary would be for someone who wants to be pursuing higher studies. I belong to a middle class family. If i would be really rich person, i would set up an NGO for such people who would help in creating loan opportunities for such poor people, because there are many out there who are intelligent enough and deserve it more than what we could. Hope my reply is not confusing.

Your reply is not confusing at all. I think that would be a great way to help others. Rather than just giving them money, you are actually setting up a way for them to be self-sufficient in the long run.

To be perfectly honest, if I were rich, I'd probably hoard most of the money. I've spent so much of my life scraping for the little bit that I have that, after the nice (not extravagant) house and decent car, after clothes for my kids and food on the table, I'd probably be too afraid of blowing the rest of the cash. Even if I had some insanely exorbitant sum of money, I'd be afraid of wasting it.... so I'd probably hire a lawyer to set up a fund that gave me a living allowance and made the rest earn money. I'd love to think that I'd donate a lot - I'd definitely donate something - but the fear of someday having nothing again would be too great. I mean, once I knew how nice real food tasted, would I really be able to go back to the cheese-flavored plastic and sawdust bread I'm eating now?

I understand your point, and I think what you would choose to do with the money sounds like a smart idea.

Honestly speaking, I would use the money for myself. Also I would use some part of my wealth in doing social service such as helping the poor, donations to the needy etc. From my personal experience, it has been my observation that when you do a good deed, it gives you a sense of personal fulfillment. I would like to do charity, not because of publicity, but to gain a feeling of satisfaction. Hence i would be practicing "gupt-daan"(secret donations). Social scientists have come up with many theories but have not been able to remove poverty from the world. I feel that the only way to remove poverty is to follow a particular pattern. That pattern is that, the excess wealth that the rich are blessed with; some part of it must be transfered to the poor, so that the scale of equilibrium is maintained.

it depends upon person to person if im rich i will spend for myself nd the one whom i feel i should help definetly i will help but if we r rich we cant live happily .. becoz of this money and wealth it will add more enemies than that of friends so be happy what u have

I agree, I think having money would definitely cause people to come out of the woodwork looking for freebies; people who pretend to be your friend but are really there for your money.

As soon as I started reading this question, charity ideas were popping into my head. I already give more money than I can afford to charity efforts, as well as doing volunteer work myself when my health allows. Just imagining all the good I could do in the world if I were rich makes me so excited! The places where I would start are a little different from yours: basically my areas of interest when it comes to charity efforts are usually people who have been through a lot of the same things I have, so most of my efforts start with victim services, shelters, crisis hotlines, that sort of thing. I agree with you though that there are a lot of people out there who don't qualify for government help but are still struggling, and I think your charity sounds great!

Your charity efforts sound great as well! I think if it's a cause that is close to your heart, it makes it a bit more rewarding for yourself as well. I guess my idea for helping people came from working at the local hospital here. I'd see tons of people come in who are living on welfare taking from the government, but using the money they did have to go on vacations or buy extravagant vehicles. On the other hand, I'd see families that didn't qualify for help struggling just to pay for the cost of health care for themselves or their children. It just frustrates me to see that kind of abuse of the system going on and no one being able to stop it.

One of my sisters was going to a prestigious law school using money from scholarships to pay for it. She maintained an extremely high grade point average, which helped her to get some of these scholarships. She did this while raising her five year old son by herself. I was just a kid when she was doing this, but I told myself if I ever got rich, I would provide regular donations to scholarships that were made available to single parents trying to make life better for themselves and their families.

Congratulations to your sister for being able to go to school while raising a child by herself! I can't even imagine how hard that must have been. Your idea is a great way for single parents to better themselves.

lol! i think about this all the time! i woud def buy for myself, but as i have three kids,2 of which are teens and one is engaged, i have my mom who,s health is extreemly poor,so i would def spend alot on them all. i imagined buying a buisness fro them ,their own homes and cars, and a huge house for me and a house onthe same proerty for my mom. kennels for all our dogs, fancy ones with air and heat and heated beds for winter. and a big barn, and catery for all our rescues! i always wanted to go with cash ,and wearing my worst, grubbiest outfit, and walk into the jaguar dealership in PAlm Springs and say, ya,ll got any carz fer sale round here?,just to whatch their jaws drop when i wip out a huge wad and wave it around yelling i gots me a hunk a money to spend!lol! then on a more seriouse side i would set up a fund for people around here hwo need vet care fro their pets but have a real need, you know, they work ,but dont have much to spare, but need help for a pet, i,m sorry, but vest around here are all about money and dont realy care about folks and their pets. i would sponser kids and art and music! i would donate to all the little churches around here who regularly hand out food to people. i,d sponser famillies at Christmas time like someone did for us one year when things were tough, and we didnt even have a tree. I would donate to the no kill shelters too. i,d walk up to the homeless guy who sleeps inside the post office after everyone is gone and take him to a hotel and let him stay, give him money and food. find out if he wants help and find who could help him if he wanted it.oh and i,ve drempt of opening a huge craft store here, with everything like Micheals has.

I'm alredy trying to plan out how I'm going to impact all of the different issues that I'm concerned with on my average salary. I'm hoping coming into a large sum of money wouldn't change my focus concerning my contribution to the world. Having the financial resources to make the impact I want would be exciting as well as overwhelming. I would make sure that my family and friends are set. I'd start by making sure everyone's mortgage and student loans are paid off. Then, set up funds for my unborn children. From there I'd use my wealth the focus on educational and health care facilities in the inner-city. Also, I'd use it to support my volunteer work in impoverished countries (starting in Africa and Latin America).

WEll i believe in first making sure that your loved ones are taken care of, granted they are worthy of it. I mean that's what we used to do, move gandparents in to our own homes, not ship them off to be visted only once a month, but that's another subject all together. Anyways after I've made sure that everyone that i love was taken care of I would definitly set up some sort of charity or grant for people that are really in need and could put that money to good use!!

Thats a very difficult question as I could never imagine having more money in my lifetime. But if I were lucky enough to have it happen I would definately share the wealth, not only with just my family and friends but a few worthwhile causes also

One of the richest man on earth is Bill gates and he,s also one of the most generous man on earth. If I were rich, of course I will give money to close friends and family and also to good cause. I'm not rich, and I still try to give once in a while. Even it,s only 25cent or 5$. If every one gives a little bit of money, it can help :)

I will first and foremost donate a sizeable amount to my church for God's work. Then I will give some to my family members, my mum, brothers and sisters. The rest of it that I will not need for myself, I will donate to charitable organisations. I will choose those organisations that are set up to help the poor and needy. These people certainly deserve the help from those in society who are much better off than them.

I would definitely help out friends and family. But I would also help others. I would start by feeding the homeless here in the US. Provide a safe place for Battered Women. I would create scholarships for young black males. Next I would donate funds to Cancer societies. Lastly I would work on increacing jobs for those who want one.

If I had a lot of money to spend, I think the first thing I would do is offer to pay off my parent's house. They housed me and my son(I was a single parent for 10 years)While they are not hurting for money, I would still do it, just to make their retirement worry free. And I would pay all of their medical bills, as they are both in not so good health. Then, I would pay off my husband's and my house, dump it/sell it and move into a bigger one. After that, I would start a group home for Children with Autism, as that is what my son suffers from, and there aren't that many of those in our state worth anything. I would give money to the local organizations that are out there to help kids like him. I would also finish my education and put money away for his education. The rest I would probably put into solid investments and let it earn some interest. I would continue to give to good causes like Autism, Cancer, Rape Victims, Domesstic Violence prevention, etc. Oh, and I would buy a house for a good friend of mine whose not able to retire because she's working for barely minimum wage at 66 years old. She is barely managing and deserves the help:)After that, I don't know. Set up scholarships for single moms so that they can go to school, daycare for while they are going, and help with rent/housing....too many to list really.
