Have You Ever Heard of Patch Adams?

A few years ago, there was a movie made with Robin Williams called "Patch Adams." It was inspired by a real man who fought and worked very hard to become a doctor against numerous odds, one of which was a doctor who set out to destroy him. The movie is absolutely wonderful but it has a special fondness to me. You see, after seeing the film, I wrote an article called "What's So Scary About Non-Conformity" and I faxed a copy to the real Patch Adams. About a week or so later, I received a handwritten letter from Dr. Adams telling me how much he appreciated the article and asking me about my poetry since I knew he liked poetry and had mentioned it. Since he doesn't use computers, as he explained in his note, he asked me to fax some. I think what impressed me the most is that as busy as his schedule is, he took the time to write a letter to someone he doesn't know simply because it's important to him to connect with others. What a very special person to have that much thought for other people. He has a clinic in West Virginia, I believe, called the Gusendheidt Institute. You see, Patch Adams is not only a doctor but a clown - the kind that puts on make-up and big red noses. He uses humor to help people get well and he's such a special man. I just had to share that story with you. I hope that is alright with everyone.

I think it's his determination to connect with other human beings and his willingness to use almost any method to do so that impresses and draws me in so much. He seems to be able to walk into any situation and become part of it and that is fascinating to me since I can't always seem to do that. It is a goal of mine, though. I think it's the simplicity of the way he just treats each person with such value that makes him so special. I want to be that way.

That is so amazing! I have watched the movie several times and it is one of my favorites of Robin Williams. I also researched the Gesundheit Institute just to see if things really worked out the way he planned and was very pleased with what I found. He is an amazing man and in my eyes is quite possibly the best doctor just because of his attitude. Sure there may be doctors more "skilled" but he can heal people's hearts and that can sometimes be the best medicine.

After I wrote the post, I decided to watch the movie again. I thought it might give me a laugh or two and encourage my dreams a bit.

I just saw that movie yesterday night and I absolutely loved it! There's a lot of funny parts but there's also a lot of sad parts as well. It's great that there is someone like him that truly exists in the world today. I would love to someday visit his hospital in West Virginia.

How cool! I have seen the movie several times, and I absolutely loved it every time. I always thought it would be so wonderful to meet the real Patch Adams. I hope you framed his letter back to you. That is truly a priceless keepsake.

I didn't frame it but I have it and I need to still fax him some of my poetry. I was hoping he might use my children's poem, "Moonlight Whispers and Lullabies," on the wall of the children's wing of his clinic with illustrations all around it. I'll have to email it to you when I get a chance. Right now, I think I'll turn on Patch Adams and watch it. I could use a good laugh.

What a special thing for Patch Adams to do. To respond back to you. That shows the compassion and the desire to reach out to people. This is a very special discussion. Bringing smiles to patients is a way to make them relax. And from watching the movie Patch Adams was good at doing this. Appreciate you sharing this.
