Starting your baby on solids

When did all you mom's out there start your baby on solids? My daughter is 4 1/2 months old and is still exclusively breastfed. Her old doctor was pushing for her to start on solids at four months. Everything that I've been reading seems to say that if you can exclusively breast feed until 6 months this is best for the baby. I know I should check with her new doctor but we just moved here and we won't be seen for another 3 1/2 weeks. So, in the mean time I was just wondering what you all did and suggest.

The more you ask, the more different responses you will get ! Hope you don't get confused! Yes i also agree with you, that wherever you may read and any number of doctors you may ask, everyone says to start solids only after 6 months. But having raised our own two kids, i would suggest to keep away from processed foods, instead make home cooked cereals and small semi- liquid meals for your child, anytime after 3-4 mnths is alright. That keeps them full for longer periods and youre not troubled by their frequent demands of beast feeding either.

I know, all the advice is so conflicting. Not only with parents but also with doctors, they all tell you a different story. I'm planning on starting the rice cereal today so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for your response and i would also sugest to follow your instincts and do what is right for your child. I think starting with rice cereals would be good, though would again suggest to keep it home based, and not the processed ready made things from the market. All the best :)

hi emma! My daughter is 14 months old...I started her on solids in the past 3 months...I was told by our local health nurse to start her on baby pablum at 6 months and keep her on just that for a month...Then start her on some baby foods after that full month..I was also told to stick to just one veggie at a time for 3 days at a time this way you could determine if she was going to have an allergic reaction to the food...I have a 14 year old and he favored fine now she eats 3xs a day successfully....when they first start out they may only eat once a day and if you don't want to buy the jar babyfood if you have a blender you could just blend veggies to soften it for them...I also found with my daughter she started teething early so I used to give her baby cookies to chew on from like 4 months on...Good luck I hope this helps

I started my little boy on solids at 4 months. They push so hard and say that they should be exclusively on milk until six months...If they want more than that give it to them..My doctor told me thats all bull$hit...Give them solids when they want it...So I did and have never looked back...He is an angel and more settled than ever and has a hearty appetite..

i started my three babies on solid food in the jar at 4 months old.its really up to you and your child weather or not to try to put your baby on jar food or cereal.if your baby is still hungry i would put alittle bit of cereal mix it with your pumping milk, and that way your baby will enjoy it.i only pump for the first 2 weeks then i switch to formula.as long as someone pumps for the first couple of days thats really all you need.but i never listen to everything my doctor or peditrictions says because you have ideas of your own,and you know if your baby wants to eat more or not full enough.so just start with alittle bit of cereal it will work out great.and at 5 months i started all 3 on baby jar food.

Great. Thanks for the advice, it's really helpful to hear from other moms! Doctor's are so confusing... I trust moms more than I do my doctors on some things.

With my son, our doctor said we should try solids at 4 months and see if he was read and he wasn't so we tried every month until he was 6 months old and ready to eat, after that he became an eating machine. hes now 18 months old and he rarely has a bottle, he loves his food. I think you might want to try some fruit or baby cereal (thats what our doctor recomended) and see ifs ready o eat, if not just wait a while and try again.
