Hi everyone. I've been thinking about this for some time now and wasn't Luna supposed to be...uggly? I find Evanna Lynch (Who plays Luna) very pretty. I dont know, tell me what you think.

I certainly could find NO indication in the series that Luna was supposed to be ugly, or even plain. I went back through my books, and I couldn't find any such thing. The closest to that would be the description of Luna as strange, odd, weird, etc. Being strange, acting or dressing weird, etc. definitely does not equal ugliness. Quite often people dismiss a person and deem them unattractive simply because they are not like everyone else (in manner, dress, personality, or beliefs). Actually, the impression I always got of Luna while reading the series (based simply upon descriptions), was one of quiet beauty and inner serenity, but quite unconcerned with others' opinions of her. Sure, she dressed in an odd manner, but that doesn't indicate neglect of her grooming habits or hygiene. As a matter of fact, when Evnna Lynch was selected for the role, J.K. Rowling made it known that Evanna fit exactly, her (Rowling's) idea of what she envisioned Luna to look like. As for Hermione, I never got the impression that she was plain. Actually, I always envisioned her as a bit awkward, not really comfortable in her own skin yet. Which is unfortunately what many teens experience. Her hair was described as bushy, and her teeth were described as big (until she had them shrank after the hex that made them grow larger). But, the hair was always something that could be "fixed" as was proven in Goblet of Fire (and in the part where she attended the Yule Ball, she was described as pretty, which from Harry's perspective may have been overlooked until that point). Remember the old saying: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which essentially means, beauty is all a matter of perspective. Since the novels were all written from Harry's perspective (save for maybe the first chapter or two of each book), the looks of certain people may have been overlooked by Harry's character. As is proven in Goblet of Fire and later in Deathly Hallows, Harry does eventually appreciate the beauty of both Hermione and Luna.

Shareaza... No need to apologize! Remember what I said about perspective.. From your perspective you thought that Luna must not be very attractive.. That's the beauty of novels.. Each person gets something different from the same writings.. One may interpret or visualize one thing, while someone else may visualize something totally different.. :) And neither viewpoint is really wrong...

I don't think Luna is described as ugly either, with her silvery eyes and blond hair. In teh 6th book also Harry thinks she's nice with her silver dress. She has only a strange sense of fashion and a dotty expression. I think the actress for Luna is perfect with her cute and dreamy expression.

I don't think it's ever really implied that Luna is ugly... and I never pictured her this way. It's only said that she has wide, round eyes, somewhat messy blonde hair, and wears strange clothes and jewelry. I think the movie portrayal is accurate, she definitely has wide eyes and rather flyaway hair. I don't think Luna or Hermione are supposed to be ugly. The only "ugly" thing about Hermione would have been her large front teeth which Emma Watson does not have, but I don't think that really matters.

No, i'ts certainly doesn't matter! These are two brilliant actresses and no1 can to their job like they do. And I'm sorry for being wrong about Luna and Hermione being ugly in the books.

I never got the impression that Luna was ugly. I actually got the impression that Hermoine might be a little plain, but never Luna. I think, though, that Rowling was trying to stress that - especially in the younger years - that these were awkward kids with awkward looks so that the younger crowd could identify with those characters.

I don't think Luna nor Hermione are ugly. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Victor Krum obviously liked Herimione. People think that Luna is ugly because of her odd ways.

Yes I agree with you pal. It was describe in the book that Luna Lovegood is indeed ugly and weird but has it's own unique talent too. Well, haven't you considered hermione supposed to be ugly too?.? In the movie, not all characters matched the exact description of the book. But i liked it anyway. ;)

maybe not so ugly but not as preety as evanna lynch and I suppose she has to look weird but in harry potter " the order of the phoenix" movie. she seems not weird to me. I think the make up artist must done something with her looks and also her behave must be clear that she is weird.

luna is not supposed to be ugly, she is just supposed to be wierd.. and to my disappointment, her character was not so emphasized in the 5th movie
