why are some coins grooved around the edge?

pennies and nickels have smooth edges, but coins of higher value are milled,or grooved, around the edge.when coins were made of silver and gold, people used to trim the edges and sell the precious metal.the best way to stop this was to mill the edges of the more valuable coins so that trimming would be noticed.this practice continues, even though few coins of precious metal are circulated.
