Do we sympathize more for animals than people?

There was a horrible story here yesterday, where a man locked a rottweiler in a car, and the temperature in the car soared to 70 celcius. So, needless to say, people were outraged, rightly so. But, this is a neighbourhood where you sometimes have to step over homeless people, and I wish we got as pissed off about that. I feel guilty when I see those commercials about starving kids in Africa, and I probably throw out more food in a day then they get in a week. I sponsor a child, and one family is getting help, but, I feel there is more we can do.

Yes, sad as it is, many, many people will rather take a day off to rally for animal rights than stop to think about humanity, or rather, the inhumanity of human acts, toward each other, the way we treat each other, and it makes me MAD how worthless human life has become in the eyes of many, worthless of attention and further thought, in a bizzarre world where animals now get more rights than people, children, women, ethnic groups, etc. People, STOP and THINK!! Despite what you may have heard, it does not hurt!!

hi bonbon664 I don't think that we spmpathize more for animals then people..I think that we all have a certain compassion and caring for people..I think just in todays high expense and living society we don't know what to do or where to start..I've heard of food banks or homeless shelters that is trying to help the homeless..But Animals are not able to tell us how to help and all they want is love and care..They can't tell us how to help they expect we already know..if that makes sense..I'm a caring person and I care equally for people that are hurt and don't have a home to live in..Also for animals that are mistreated...

Humans are intelligent or supposed to be the intelligent species, we are also a nation of animal lovers, we love our animals and if anyone hurts an animal we are more likely to take offence than if it's a human. Because animals are reliant on us to look after them, we see them as needy, wanting us and loving us, and in our eyes they are vulnerable and anyone who takes advantage or think animals are fair game are treated with the animosity they rightfully deserve.

I think it is because we are bombarded so much about those starving African kids that people forget there are children in just as bad a situations here in North America. Also people think that for some reason animals do not deserve to suffer, but because people have brains, they do. But as for commercials, it is a case of too much concentration on foreign children and less on our own. There is an organization called American Second Harvest, but we hardly hear about it on TV unless one is watching Extreme Makeover or they have a special broadcast. We here lots about the many organizations helping the starving in South America, Asia, and Africa. So it is a wonder that people want to help animals, they think that people here do not need help. It is a matter of getting more exposure.

I feel for people as well as animals, but mostly for animals and children.Children are our responsibility, they depend on us to feed, cloth and help them to grow into productive adults...Animals are totally dependant on us also ...I do feel for adults, but they can think for themselves and they can make choices, but children and animals are meant to be cared for and taken care of.I am a animal lover and i also love children and its hurts to see either of those hurt or wanting.i truely believe that some people do not deserve children or animals.I read in the paper just the other day where this step father grippled this tiny baby because he was crying, the child will never be the same,he will never walk or eat on his own due to brain damage...then i read where this man was abusive to his wife and children and when he got mad the wife and children left the house out of fear, and this idiot man took it out on the family dog,he broke the dogs legs and gave it a brain concussion, when the wife returned she rushed the dog to the vet but it had to be put to sleep..These are two very sad but true stories and it happens everyday to innocent children and helpless animals.I don't really know what to do except when i see this, just turn them in..The man that hurt the baby went to prison but prison was to good for him..The other person that hurt the poor animal was going to get 3 years in prison. They had a poll in the paper for people to write in and they wanted to know what the public thought.I wrote a letter and told them to put the man in jail for 3 years that killed the dog...Its so sad..

You're right, I think it's because they are so small, frail and helpless, can't help but feel more for them when they are hurt or whatnot, but for people, it depends who they are and at what age. I feel more for younger ones than animals.

I do not do this so much but someone does.I think pets are useful for the lonely person to spend their time and show love to.On the other side, many people need help, they have no food no house, how do we treat them ,A dog's pie???why not changing a hotdog to present a guy who need help?

Look at the Micheal Vick situation. PETA is ready to convict anyone who is accused of doing anything wrong to an animal. The passion that organization shows is not duplicated by anyone when something bad happens to a person. It's sad really, makes me think of that South Park episode.

yes I believe a lot more could be done but it really does seem that the the people who can least afford it are the ones donating to these things, the family people sponsoring children and such, what about all these millionairs that have so much money they will never ever use it, there are billionaires out there, I can't understand how anyone would want to sit on that much money when they could do so much good with it, I guarrantee if the ordinary family people who sponsor children stopped the problem would be way over double, as for caring for animals they must be cared for as well they can not speak for themselves...

Animals can either offer you companionship or their teeth.Humans are many-headed with their grey area.I will probably always offer an animal immediate undying sympathy, where with a human I will be wary and skeptical at best. But that's in personal situations,I buy the homeless food when I can,and do what i can for charities.

Well as humans we are more affected by things around us more than far away from us. Its not that we dont care about other people far away but that our immediate attention is drawn towards the closest thing. And then what is wrong if we are more compassionate towards animals. Humans can atleast cry and talk and plead for help. But what do the animals do? and if we really are humanitarians shouldnt we be concerned about every living species in danger rather than just our own..

Some people do feel more compassion for animals than they do for people. I guess the important thing is, people do feel compassion. The ones who do not feel for animals or for humans are very poor indeed. I see you have a great sense of compassion, and that is why you are helping others. Yes, I am sure there is more that we can do for those in need. The same kind of person that would leave a dog in the car might also leave a child in a car, Heaven forbid!!!

i think its because as a society we have become used to seeing homeless, or starving children in africa. its really sad to say it but it is like desensitization. people die in movies, tv, songs, news, etc all the time......so we just kinda look over it. there are so many people going hungry every night in america. the should be no reason for anyone to have no food in this country. i am like you, though, i dont really know what to do about it.

I think the caring of people for people or animals depends strongly on where you grew up. People in cities (especially western countries) often feel more sympathy for animals than for people. This is probably caused as animals look innocence and have no chance to defend themselves. The look of an abused dog who keeps faithfull to his owner is horrible and makes people mad. Outside cities, people see animals as a mean to make a living or their next meal. Cattle is forced into wagons to go to see the butcher, seals are killed and so on. I think in developing countries, this is a little bit more the case than in western countries. We, humans, should look more after both humans and animals. There is already enough going wrong in this world. Job related. Some people make a living from killing animals

Well, I know that all of these things are mutually exclusive, one or all of them will continue to happen no matter waht we do. People are often homeless because of an inability to function, they often need meds to function and stop taking them for one reason or another and end up homeless as a result. Or maybe they are homeless due to loss of jobs etc. Homelessness has many causes, as do children starving in Africa or anywhere else in the world. It will take a major effort to change the plight of the homeless and the starving. On the other hand, the plight of that dog is due to one ignorant owner who had control over the situation. The owner was the only one of the 3 situations mentioned who really had a choice. It is easy to get angry at a name and a face and a local person who did this has both.
