Do you read book reviews?

Ok, readers, my question is do you read reviews? If so, where do you find these reviews (newspaper, magazine, websites)? If you get your book information online, what websites do you like?

No, never worry about them. I know which authors I like, and would buy the book regardless of what the critics say about them. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, I like to make my own mind up.

How do you find new authors? Do you get recommendations from friends or just find them by browsing in a bookstore?

I love to browse bookstores, and could spend hours one(if I had the time, lol!) That way I get to read the blurb as well.

No I don't read book reveiws. I just pick what books I read by if they interest me by reading the back cover of the book or if it is by an author that I like. I also don't read or listen to movie reveiws either b/c a lot of times the movie critics will say a movie is bad or good. And I totally have the opposite opinion of it. So it is a waste of my time to go off of what someone else thinks about it.

Thanks for stopping by to comment. Seems like the majority here don't read reviews. I like to read them, but I still make up my own mind. The best thing about reviews for me is that they help me find stuff I might not have discovered otherwise.

I read book reviews.I read them in the newspapers and also in the amazon.com. I try to read the reviews first before I purchase... but there are few authors whose books review need to be read because I trust that they are good ones.

I read a lot of book reviews, sometimes I even enjoy them more after I've read the book to see if I agree with the reviewer or what I would have emphasized and left out of the review. That's just me. Thanks for stopping by to comment.

i like to read book reviews because they can help me get a better understanding of the books i have read or i'm going to read. book reviews can be found everywhere such as newspapers, magazines and websites.

I like to read reviews too. It doesn't really alter my opinion about a book, except that sometimes it does alert me to books that I didn't know would be very good. Some of my friends offer up suggestions, but I only have one friend whose reading taste is really similar. Thanks for stopping by to talk about book reviews.

I rarely do..sometimes when a book is critiqued badly, then that actually interests me to read the book to see for myself.. Though I'm not the kind of person to read a book because it's popular. Usually its because my friends have read it or someone I know personally recommends a book.

Ok, you are the rebel type! LOL I am with you about popular books though. Although I don't automatically rule things out because the made the bestseller list, that's not necessarily a good indication I will like the book. I usually like more indie movies, too, not the big blockbusters. I guess my reading and movie watching taste are not mainstream.

Hi Sporean. You probably think I am nuts responding so long after you posted this. I am just reading it today. I never came back to this conversation, and happened to find it as I am cleaning out old emails. I need to learn a lot more about linking to the blog. I have no idea how to do that. I would be happy to link your blog to mine if I could figure out how to do that. I also have reviews up at another site that I would like to link to my blog. Just one more challenge. Thanks for all your helpful advice. I know that I need to change up my blog but I am really busy this month, so not sure when I will get to it, but hopefully sooner rather than later. Again, thanks for all your helpful advice.

Hi AnythngArt, Yes, i was surprised that your response came after such a long time but that is the marvel of the Web! As for linking blogs to your site, just add a "link" widget under Blogger's layout menu. Key in URL & names of blogs you want to link to your blog. If you have any other questions, i will be more than happy to help out. You can also leave a comment at my blog if you have any queries. Take care.

I don't remember the last time I read a book review. I tend to look at books themselves, and if the book itsself looks interesting, I read the book. I don't need someone else's review to tell me what is and is not interesting.

Thanks for stopping by to comment. You've got an independent spirit! Do you spend time browsing in bookstores to determine what you want to read...or how do you pick out books?

I read book reviews. I actually enjoy it very much. I get the New York Times delivered to my home each Sunday and the first section I read is the book review section. I also have a blog that I read often which is written by a librarian and she is very humorous. She peppers her entries with snipits and reviews from books. It is very entertaining. Right now I can't get that site to open. I will revisit and attach the link as soon I am able to open it.

I love the "New York Times." I used to live in Chicago so it was easy to get it, but now I live far out of the city and it's more of a challenge, so I end up reading online reviews from them. It's not as good as having the actual paper, of course. I would still love to see the blog of the librarian you are talking about.

I couldn't possibly read all the books I wanted in my lifetime. The reviews help me weed out some of the books that aren't worth the time or helps me find really good books I might have missed. Thanks for stopping by to comment.

I love PaperbackSwap, and I am on there all the time. It's a great place to go for books. And it helps keep my own bookshelves managable. I never write reviews for them, do you? I know that they have that function, but I've never participated. I just swap.

Sometimes I write book reviews. Usually if the book is not that good, I like to write a review for it or if the book was really good.

Never. I believe that no one can understand what I like and what I dont. So it is better to try a book and have a self-opinion about it. But I will discuss the story or plot with friends without sharing my opinion.

I don't find most reviewers understand either the author or the content they read when it comes to the things I am willing to read. There are some people I pay attention to when they say something is great, but usually make up my own mind about whether or not something is bad. Reading 200 books a year really gives you a feel for who knows good from bad too when you see someone recommending something repeatedly.
