New Books vs. Used Books

Do you like to get new books? Or do you prefer finding them cheap at yard sales or someplace similar? I like both. Sometimes you just can't find the books you want at yard sales. I don't read much romance, which is most of what you will find at yard sales. I like science fiction and fantasy. Sometimes I get books at Half.com.

It does not matter to me as long as they are good and they are readable. I have so many books that it is hard to keep track of them all at times. I love reading. I love mythologies, science fiction, fantasy, and graphic novels. I hate romance novels. I read so much of those as a girl that I swore to myself I would never read another one. I am a very action oriented person. My favorite read so far was "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. Heck, anything by Gaiman seems to be good.

I have a lot of books too. I have to keep a list of the ones I want so I won't get mixed up with ones I already have.

I have a great librarian who tries to get the books I want so I get them free. HEHE Being low income I try not to spend money on things I don't have to. Also I do check out book sales to get good deals. The school has done a trade books week this year which was awesome to get something new to read. But if I can't I will buy a book if I really want it and can't wait to get it used. Usually a book from a series I am reading. My father is a reader to but he buys books and has a library at home. It is huge! When he needs to make space he will spend my some of his collection which is awesome. I usually give away the books I have read so someone else can get some joy out of it to. I am a minimalist too so I have to get rid of it if I am not using it. HEHE Vicki

I now buy almost only second hand books from estate sales, auctions, library sales and even some thrift shops. Where I live a lot of people buy books , read them once and then donate or sell them so it's possible to get books in fine condition with dustjackets in fine condition for about a dollar. I also sell books and this is where my inventory comes from.

Do you find many first editions that way? Do you have your own site to resell them or do you go through Half.com? I recently got interested in collecting books via a group discussion on BN.com, but I am really just still learning.

I don't loan my books out very much. Other people don't take care of them like I want them to. One of my friends dropped my books in the snow. I didn't like that.

That is very true. It just seems like new books will last longer. And if I like a book, I will read it many times.

i used to prefer old books only because they are cheap and when we the same books in lesser rate then there is no need of going for going to buy new books. so i used to prefer old books. the other reason for going old books is after studying the books we can return them and get some money from them also.

Nothing smells batter than new book. As much as I like to read, most of my books are old, but I really enjoy having new book, especially if very special book that I want to read...

There's nothing better than a brand new hardcover book, but I consider that a real luxury. Most of the time, I am trading books online through PaperbackSwap.com. I've gotten a lot of great books to read that way and gotten rid of some old books that I knew I would never read again. I still buy books at the store, usually Borders because I am a member of Gather.com and when you participate at that site, you earn points that you can then use to get giftcards for places like Borders. One time I won $500 in Borders gift cards from Gather, and it was the best prize ever! I gave my brother and sister each a $100 card, but I still had $300 to spend on books. I went wild! It was the greatest feeling ever. If you are interested in joining Gather, you can go through the following link or just sign in at Gather.com: http://www.gather.com/inviteLanding.jsp?parentMemberId=62274&tc=14

Gather.com is a website where you get points for writing articles (about anything), responding to posts, posting pictures, and so on. The topics range from TV shows to movies to books to families to health to money and so on. No topic is off limit and you can write as much or as little as you like. People sign up for groups based on their interests. They run a lot of contests. Right now they have one for a free guitar and one for family reunions. The contest I won was for commenting on people's "first chapters" to their books. One person won a publishing contract. I was one of many people who won just for commenting on the stories. They have a new one coming up for romance writers (mine was just general fiction). Most of the time I am on there I write about books, but you could be on there talking about cars or music or having kids. The topics are really unlimited.

I love to get new books but they are expensive, so if I can find a book I want for less I go for it I do look for them at yard sales and half price book stores, if someone asks me what I want as a gift I usually tell them a gift card for the book store, I like romance but I enjoy other things as well.

I love to go to used book shops to look for fiction. You never know what books you will find, and except for certain books, I'll enjoy a wide variety of books so will enjoy plenty of older ones. The last new fiction I bought was from the SciFi book club, and that was buy 4 at a dollar each and then buy 4 more over 2 years, but you can get the first one of the 4 for half price if you get it when you get the first 4. I will go to a regular books store to buy non-fiction books, usually computer books, or new books when I want it now, and for gifts.

I love to find good used books. I don't feel as pressured to read them promptly lol If I buy a new book, which isn't often, I feel more compelled to read it soon. Every time I look at it, I'll be reminded of the money I spent and start to feel guilty lol, if I haven't read it. I love to read, but I have to be in a certain mood to be able to focus.

I hate to buy new books, knowing that I may be reading it only once or twice. The only new books I have are gifts. I prefer to get them from bookstore sales. Its much cheaper, and there's a thrill when I get a bestseller for a less. Right now I have so much book I don't know what to do with them, but I'm happy I didn't spend to much on them.

i prefer second-hand books if they are the books i have to buy, though i don't have much interest in,for example, designated textbooks.usually ican get them second hand book storre or from the seniors. if for the books of my love,i'd better get a new one designed perfectly.because i know perhaps i'll keep them lifelong, even pass to the next generation. haha,a joke.

Even when I was buying textbooks I wanted books in good condition. You get more when you sell them back that way. I am pretty picky about my books.

I love to get new books as much as possible! Especially when it hasn't been opened before and it's still wrapped in plastic. I love the sound that new books make when you turn the page, and I most especially love the smell of new books! Call me crazy but it's just one of my favorite things! However, if I'm a little bit cash strapped and I'm dying to read, I'd hit the used books stores like BookSale at the mall. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I'd find a title that I've been searching for, titles that are usually old or out of print already, but have been highly recommended by others. Other times I'd find some pretty good reads. I know yard sales and used books sales are, more often than not, disappointing, not to mention a bit overwhelming, especially since they usually just stack the books there without any particular order, but if you're patient you just might find what you're looking for.

I'm pretty much the same. I love new books. It's especially fun to get new books in the mail. It's like Christmas. But, sometimes I can't afford them. So, I go to the used book store. Although, I love getting crochet pattern books at used book stores. Because they are usually ones that are out of print.

I suppose it depends on the type of book I'm buying. Cookbooks and other "text" books are usually new or in like-new condition. I buy the cheapest version of the book I can find. I mostly find my books at amazon, but I'm not afraid to buy the used ones sold by other users. :) Most of my reading books come from the library or my MIL's book stash. Those are both free, and I don't have to store them when I'm done. :) Children's books come from everywhere. Garage sales, good will, amazon, grandparents. I'm almost embarrassed to tell you how many books these kids have. I think they could almost open up their own library! They read each and every one of them, though.

Hello myfanwy65, I love to read and I don't really care where I get the books. It doesn't matter to me whether it is new or used book. I only read it once and I will keep it in my collection. After a while, I will re-sell the books at the local auction site *laughs*

i say depends on what kind book. textbook, its always new, i have no choice back the, i studied in a school where textbook where written and printed esp for the school and its a must to buy, thew prof our your textbooks but leisure book like pocketbooks, magazines or any kind, i get it from booksale, its a secondhand bookstore but situated in a mall, so its still convenient for me, and cheaper. i also take advantage of mall sale, which include sale of back issues of really informative magazine, sometimes for as low as 50% discount, i can get a good buy during mall sales.

Unless it is a reference book, I never buy new books. Instead I will wait until it comes out in the library or I see it at a tag sale or a friend passes it down. For the most part I use my local library...it is free and the selection is huge and always growing.

Once a month I buy book and it doesn't matter for me whether it is a used one or new. What important is that I love that book and its quality.I'm extra careful in buying used book even if i like the book I don't buy it if it is in poor condition.
